Starting a tractor by spinning the PTO

I can't believe there would even be a video like this. I wanted to see the strap catch, wind back up and start chopping the car to shreds . Its demonstrations like this that may tempt folks to do stupid things.

Nah...but it could happen. More likely would be to have the strap whip back and rip off an arm or a leg of the guy or the unsuspecting woman. Loose straps and chains usually find a home around a flailing limb. Arms and legs come off real easy when matched against a PTO.

Anyone who has seen a serious farm accident knows the mixture of a pilgrim machine operator and a sketchy plan of action has good odds of ending badly. If you're going to beat Darwin at his own game you've got to know which odds are worth playing and when to walk away. In this case, start walking.

That dude is the most clean cut and well spoken redneck I have seen.

'Round here, rednecks dont start new tractors with Honda Accords. They would be using the '78 chevy with a wooden flatbed, and the tractor is a '70's (more or less, cause nobody remembers exactly when pappy bought it) Massey Ferguson or Ford.

As long as the strap doesn't hang up on the PTO, you're set... if it does, then the PTO will likely pull the rusty what's-left-of-a-bumper off your '78 chevy.

But its a good idea... I just wouldn't document it where the safety police could find it. Not for the average joe, experianced operators only please. Someone who has an understanding of 'slipping the clutch' from first hand experiance.

In the video he states that the tractor has a gear transmission but can't be started by "towing". I'm not familiar with gear tractors, but this seems contradictory. It could be that he doesn't want to drag the hog but it is not clear.

Correct.
It is a gear drive tractor. Just pull the tractor and start the thing up.

The comments below the video do provide state ample warnings about using this method...so the man was aware of the risks.
In an emergency, I guess this would be one way to start a tractor, but If it was a gear machine, I think I'd prefer to try to tow start it before this method...of course, that would depend on how the bucket was positioned and other aspects previously mentioned in this thread.

The loader was on the ground.

Loader down and b/hog down really puts a damper on the Accord being able to pull start it...

Because with a hydro pto you can't engage it until you have hydraulic pressure, i.e. already running. As even the demonstrator notes, this is not the safest thing in the world.
