i have a lx 178 tractor with a bad starter solenoid. When I install the new one, how do I know that it has engaged to the starter?

If the starter spins?

The voltage between the solenoid's terminals with the big cables on them goes from ~12.6 volts to (near) zero which means the solenoid's "switch" has closed.
When the solenoid has ~12.6 volts across these terminal's it means the solenoid's "switch" is open and no battery current is passing through to the starter.

Hi Coby,

Thanks for the reply. What I was getting at was this. The Starter solenoid has a plastic rotary at the top, so my question is how do I know that is seated correctly in the starter?

Ooooohhh!!
( "I see!" - said the blind man.)

I'm not that familiar with these, and only worked on old Bendix gear type starters. Once you take the old one off, can you see how the solenoid's plunger will push the pinion into the ring gear?

I think you'll know right away when you try it and either the starter just spins or the whole engine cranks.

Thanks Coby, I didn't explain myself to well the first go round. The new one comes tomorrow and I'm sure it will be a learning experience. I'll keep you posted

Don't worry, it will make sense how the end nestles in there. Do watch the terminal orientation of the old one as some replacements are not exact.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm going to move this thread over to our John Deere section.

Hey Guys, Can some send me a picture of where a spring goes on a lx178 John Deere. I know it goes somewhere on the govenor, but I can't figure out where. I have the arm and spring on the back end of the carb, but there is another spring that goes on the idle arm and attached to the governor somehow. Any pics would help. Thanks, Denny A

Can you post a pic? You can download a manual for the FD440V engine at mymowerparts.com

Tomplum, I added an attachement of the spring that I was telling you about. It is the one circled in red. I hope the attachement made it
Thanks

I would think that this should go to arm behind the control that your throttle control cable moves. Sound right to you?

Tom,

Not only does that sound right, it makes alot of sense. I'll connect one end to the idle arm and the other to the trottle cable. Thanks Tom!
