On gas engines some starters have the "R" terminal which usually had a wire going directly to the ignition coil to bypass the ballast resistor (on the older points ignition engines) during starting so the coil had full battery voltage.

Does anyone know exactly what the "R" stands for? I always thought it stood for "relay" but I've also heard it stood for "resistor bypass". Anyone know for sure. Did some searching on Google but couldn't find a definitive answer.

Thanks.
