Starter problems

/ Starter problems #21
Where my previous post was in error, was saying that this test would eliminate a bad ground. A bad battery ground would not be eliminated, so both ends of the ground cable should be checked for good connections.

You know, I don't know why, but I thought you were trying to bypass the solenoid.:confused2: I went back and re-read your post and see clearly I was wrong. You are just making the normal low-current connection between the hot wire and solenoid that the the key normally makes. That's exactly how to hotwire the starter and what I would do.

Notice in the photo below that the front side of the starter has a big lug with a hex-head and the solenoid connection is inside the booted plastic connection beside it. On the back side of the starter and almost impossible to access without removing the starter is the blue-black booted lead going from the solenoid's high current contacts to the motor. This style of starter is common on many tractors.

Looks like they are bound to make everything nearly impossible to work on eventually.

It was good that you made me look at my post so I could remember to say, "...be sure the tractor is not in gear when you..." ...are bypassing safety interlock switches.
