Starter going bad in Ranger

Easy is good, the one in my Jeep died in a parking lot. I replaced it right there, took about 10 mins. Mine didn't give any warning.

good thing it's not like my 98 dodge ram 4x4 was. had to remove support bar and fidget with a long long extension and wabble sockets to get to top nut of 2 bolt and 1 stud setup :(

Sometimes I don't know what these auto engineers are thinking. I had a Chrysler van that was terrible to change the rear spark plugs. Just plain awful setup.

yep.. if it wasn't something that grease and penetrant oil would fix, AND as crazyal said.. and ez pull.. then I'd surly repalce the entire thing and not pay for a bendix (only)that may cost 3/4 of a new unit..e tc.

Yep.... could just need lubrication as old as it is. The grease may have dried out and the bendix is not throwing the gear out far or fast enough.
If you get it out take it apart and grease both ends.
Remember it has brushes and they will want to escape when you remove the armature.
I think that is actually a Mazda isn't it?

I think the motor is a ford, it is a mazda trans though.

Its the 8 plug 2.3L, but was thinking this was a ford block.

For $35 im not taking apart that oily starter and hoping it will be the problem, it may be but im just not that hard up.

As you can see its quite dirty from miles of running dirt roads and 20+ years of road grime that sticks to a starter that is wet with oil from a leaky old motor. So you see why im not to quick to pull it apart. I probly should but im not.

Note the end of the shaft the bendix rides on the end looks like it has wear. Also not sure if you see the tiny buldge on the open end but is that suppose to be like that?
And you can see after all these years its wearing the edge of the flywheel but nothing to alam me, after all it has some age on it.

Throw it in a plastic bag and trade it in for a replacement. Just dealing with the grease and slime alone is not worth $35 (at least to me).

I agree, get to Auto Zone or Advanced and pick up a cheap replacement.

fo sho. the time you waste on cleaning it and replacing a sinlge part would be better spent putting a decent priced new one on..
