Started the Mulching,,Before and After

Finally pulled the trigger and decided to get some mulching done....got the property lines done and started on the homesite......heres some pics.

None of the mulcher in action yet....(I was staying a good ways away)...the lot is 10 acres +/-.

This was a pass or two.......the are remulching some to shred the larger stuff and increase the home/septic site....

My hope is to be able to over seed it with winter rye after they are done and next year plant grass. Not sure if I can do that right over the mulch or not....

Yeah, you would need to get the seed in contact with the topsoil so it will come up. If the mulch has a lot dark soil mixed in you should be ok. You can always try a small area to test the condtions.

how long can the grass seed be on the ground before getting watered?

I would check your local weather channel and pick a rainy forcast to seed. I've used a pto driven, 3 pt, seed spreeder for a tractor before and it made the job real easy.

It's hard to tell for sure without a close-up photo, but some of the trees look pretty damaged around the base. I always struggle with getting too close to trees even when I'm using my rotary cutter. I'd imagine your mulcher could easily girdle the tree and kill it. I'd imagine it is just a case of learning how close you can come to a tree and then having enough self-control to stay outside that distance. The property lines do look very nice. Anyone who has ever cleared property lines will surely appreciate the job you did. Heck, I'd bet the surveyors would be have been really happy if you had done the clearing beforehand.

Great pics!! I really enjoy those before and after shots. Now that you can get in there and mover around, it will be easy for you to maintain it and even widen it if you want at a later date.

As for the grass seed, nature sends out seeds all the time, and they can last years until the conditions are right. I'd put rye down when you're ready for it, and it will sprout a few days after your next rain. The stuff to be careful with is hulled bermuday. If you spread un hulled, it will sit and wait until conditions are right, but hulled needs to be planted just before a rain as it will rot and die fairly quickly without the hull on it to protect it.
