Starlink

This is from my neighbor across the road concerning Starlink:

Looks like I won't be trying Starlink.
I hate to ask, but did he change the network name and set a good password?

I would offer the neighbor cash for the Starlink setup but I have just as many trees as the neighbors. I have more of an open area in front of the house but I'm not willing to bet $500+ on it.

A mast is not all that hard and makes a world of difference for visibility. . .

I have HughesNet and it works just fine for me. Especially since I didn't have to pay $600 for their equipment and $110 a month for their service.

I had Hughesnet. It was by far the worst service I've ever had and I paid hundreds of dollars for the equipment and paid again after the initial equipment failed and needed to be replaced! I wouldn't wish this service on my enemy. And my friend who suggested it to me had a similar experience. Hughesnet (n) times 20

This was my experience with them also.

If it works for you, great. Enjoy. That style of satellite service would never work for me because the latency makes work VPN use all but impossible. But everyone has different needs and that's why there are different product offerings.

As someone living in a rural area with very limited ISP options the $500 equipment cost was a SMALL price to pay for the high-speed (essentially) unlimited Internet service we get. It's a game changer for my situation.

Hughesnet was by far the worse ISP I ever had. You couldn’t update anything, do anything other that upload some email without attachments. Every day I would get FAP’d. Downloading anything took forever.
Exede was a little better, but still not great. Eventually I found out on here about the then $20 mobley deal with AT&T. It blew away both hughesnet and exede . I still pay for it, but the $110 Starlink is great. I now use the mobley when I travel. I had to pay for both the hughesnet and exede equipment, no different than Starlink.

A friend of ours has HughesNet. They usually run at about 0.9mbps, which is even worse than the crappy DSL we just got rid of.

And this is with the Starlink “Best Effort” - not even the full service.

If the HughesNet is sufficient for your needs, save the money.

I had hughesnet from 2009-2012 for $60 month, then exede from 2012-2017 for $50 month. Exede equipment was $269 in 2012.
