Starlink

At some point, they will likely have to put some limits on "abusers". I cant imagine my usage would hit their limits, if they did impose something. We don't "need" to stream everything we watch in 4K.

If we did hit some future limit, and they throttled our throughput, I cant imagine any throttling they would do would cut us down to lower than what we have with our old 7/1 DSL line. Our DSL typically actually delivers 5-6 down and 0.7-0.8 up - when it's working, and it was unreliable. (We were sometimes calling the provider multiple times per month to send out a tech to correct problems in the line.)

On Starlink I'm getting 100+ down (usually 120-150) and generally close to 20 Mbps upload speeds (ranging from 15-23, sometimes higher). Even if they imposed throttling to 10% of the speeds I'm normally getting now, that would still be substantially faster than what I was getting on DSL, and so far (one month of usage), it has proven far more reliable.

That's my thinking too. They'd have to throttle the heck out of it to get as bad as i have currently.

Have you kept your DSL as backup? From what I read, there are still blind spots in the sky as the satellites cross the sky and you lose signal. I'm thinking of keeping my DSL at first because of this. Thoughts?

I hope they are not playing us for suckers. If they are short on cash, it makes more sense to put those who have not paid the $99 ahead of the line. They already got our money after all. It bothers me is that everyone is getting the same time for roll out. I would think the northern market would be ready sooner as the satellites are deployed.

Like most who have signed up, I have no other viable and affordable option.

I have kept the DSL for now. We've only had Starlink for about a month. Uptime has improved even in that time. Their app has a page that shows statistics when I just checked, it reported that in the last 12 hours, we have experienced 14 seconds of downtime due to "no satellites" and 5 minutes of "Beta downtime" (which from what I understand is planned downtime for things like system upgrades and tweaking their set-up). I've been in multiple 1 and 2 hour zoom meetings. THat's the real test: even though it does not use as much bandwidth as streaming a movie, everything is live - there is no buffering as there is when watching youtube or streaming a movie, so any little drop shows up immediately. The only thing I've noticed is that once or twice in the course of one of those meetings, things will stutter or freeze for a second or two. It's not been a big deal, and in fact is better than what I got on our DSL line even when I was the only user (with Starlink those one or two brief incidents have been the worst that happens with two kids streaming YouTube videos simultaneously).

I'm guessing I'll probably drop the DSL in another month or so.

Let's not forget the other method to enforce data limits. That is, they charge you for each gig you go over. Verizon was that way for a while when I had one of their data plans for home.

There is always that possibility. However, even with a couple of kids hooked on YouTube and us occasionally streaming a family movie, I'm not concerned about it. It's better than our other option, and (in both time and money) than driving to another location to get high speed public WiFi. In the unlikely even they ever run fiber to the home in my neighborhood, I'll certainly consider switching.

I put in our preorder mid Feb. Just waiting on the actual unit to ship. I will try and post some tests as well. We are in the Rockies at 8600 ft. The disconnects are a real concern for anyone that needs to work over a persistent connection. These days lots of people connect to work networks via a Virtual Desktop, and this often requires a persistent connection. They just launched another 60 satellites 2 days ago...keep em coming!
