Starlink

I can see if you have 10 kids at home all wanting to stream different movies or play different games etc...but what does the average user do that can utilize all that bandwidth ?

Bandwidth and actual throughput is like a Kia vs a Ferrari. The Kia wants to run 160 mph but it just cant. Latency is another big issue. On my speed tests I run on the fiber I install is typically 3 ms. Satellite internet of any kind will never out perform a fiber connection. But for all those folks like me in rural America it doesn't really matter.

It's the speed factor. I have yet to see 4k or 8k standardized streams. The current infrastructure cannot support that. gigabit networks could.

Trees are an issue; several beta testers have commented on it. More important is a good view of the northern sky. Because the orbits are inclined from the poles, the satellites are in view for more time at the northern (and southern) limits of their orbits. That poleward view that will have more of an impact on satellite visibility, and therefore uptime until the satellite numbers come up.

Here are some tools to help visualize how it works;
Coverage model to see what kind of coverage you might have.
Starlink satellite orbit simulation to see how the incline affects visibility.

All the best,

Peter

Thank you for the links.

You install the mount more or less pointing up (they say within 40˚ of vertical), and once the dish connects to its first satellite it will orient itself to the best position for maximum coverage. They do want to be able to see a 100˚ wide slice of the sky above, so either mount high or in an open area. They do not have a mount designed for a standing seam roof yet. I might get around to making one using S-5! clamps (designed for mounting solar PV panels and a variety of other hardware on standing seam roofs). We used a ton of those back when I was working with a solar installer. Or I might put it on my garage roof or on a pole. Haven't decided yet. Initially, it will just be on a pedestal out in my yard with the cable run across the ground. I'm not messing around with a roof mount until the winter eases off a bit.

Very cool idea on the S-5 clamps. I never knew they even existed!

Exactly....

But I hope many potential users get their undies in a knot and decide to skip the beta testing. I will try almost anything to get decent access. Heck, I am so far in the boonies it is 2.5 miles to my mailbox on a dirt road. Uphill both ways...LOL

Those links ponytug posted show my area is not too bad. 90+% coverage currently so that is promising....unless the 10% down is during the day.

My local electric co-op teamed up with a local phone company to run fiber to rural areas here and I finally got hooked up. It's like night and day compared to my earlier Centurylink DSL. It looks like I won't be needing Starlink. I had been connected to Centurylink/Embarq/Sprint for about 40 years but they decided not to update their system so I won't miss them.
