I consider it toast now with cell service internet and cell phone hot spots.

bad? was so bad that I couldn't even connect to ***** about how bad it was. Wont miss their customer service either.

I've been down the Hughesnet road in 2007-2008. When Verizon Wireless became a viable alternative, it gave me great pleasure to smash the Hughesnet dish with my FEL. :D

Just wondering...If this Starlink service will have the bandwidth etc to allow all (or many) of the customers to use streaming TV and movie services...will they get any flak from the dedicated satellite TV services...?

It would be great to see companies like A T & T (Direct TV) forced to allow customers to just pay for the channels they want and not be forced to subscribe to "packages" etc...!

have you seen the average latency of Hughesnets geostationary system. forget msec. IIRC ~.6 seconds?

I wish mine would go that fast. I guess mine offsets one that is in the .3 second range.

...

Unfortunately, I don't have that option. Hughes net is the only option I have. I'm looking forward to Starlink!

They installed fiber on the next road over from me, so I talked to them about my road. My road is on the list to do in a few years, but they will stop 3 miles before they get to me.

The local electric co-op just buried fiber down the road in front of my place. Most of the rural areas in this county will have fiber from this project. It's supposed to be available this fall for me. It looks like Centurylink's slow dsl will be history in this area in a couple of years.

I believe that claims based on calculated engineering results from a lab simulation will _never_ match reality.

Man, I can tell you been there!

I just had dsl installed. No cost to me. It was not free, someone paid. If you look at your bill there are many little additional charges, one is for telecomm in rural areas.

2 things I learned. The installer, a 50 year old guy who simply ran the cables and hooked me up, he did not dig the trench, told me he made $120 K last year with overtime and could have been more. That surprised me.

I knew it was no cost to me but, I asked why? DSL runs on the telephone wires, the twisted pair. Because telephony is a utility, the providers must provide service.

I reminded him, I got no phone, no land line. He laughed and said the phone cos are working congress real hard to get that changed. He said Spectrum would have charged $4K to run the 2600 ft.

There is a move to make internet access a utility.

Bad hah! Spectrum ISP and Verizon here. North central florida, Marion county west of Ocala. Can you say "Yo-Yo"?
2-3 hours "up" followed by 5-10 minutes down & during the daylight hours.
We had sattillite when they first came out (different house - Melbourne, FL) and that was truly aweful. Out every time it rsined. Even received a plane landing at airport one Sunday AM. Ditched that quick.
Supposed to be a 24/7 "Utility" (yes I know we lost that fight long ago) but I don't see _any_ attempt at refunding for service interruptions nowadays. Musk et al don't care. Bet he's got latest & greatest 365.

Maybe where you live. Awful lot of this country still doesn't have cell service. Here's a map of Nevada - the areas in white have NO cell service.

Sure, you'll just have to pay more for the channels you desire.

Has anyone installed an app like Sellarium that maps stars and satellites? I did and found Starlink satellites constantly whizzing overheard.

I'm in the White Mountains of Central New Hampshire. We do not have line of sight south for any conventional satellite TV service, and we're on the bare fringes of cell phone service. There is no cable at all. Cell service comes and goes depending upon how many tourists are up here in the mountains.

But, it sure is peaceful!
