Starlink

It seems to me that businesses charge different prices regionally all of the time. What seems to be the sticking point here is that Skylink actually was honest about it. I get the perspective that makes some people feel they are subsidizing others. Personally, I find it refreshing that a business spells out the truth. We choose how we respond.

As for service issues, I have used at least 10 different ISPs in four different markets in the US. All have issues. I will not go back to AT&T unless they are the only way to reconnect online. Hopefully, the technical problems will be resolved soon.

Dishy got behind on the auto snow melt function this morning and we lost signal for ninety minutes or so. That may, or may not, be related to an OS update that may have turned off the heating during the reboot. It was only just below freezing, but we did get 4-6" overnight, preceded by freezing rain.
My SL antenna is temporarily sitting in a pasture awaiting a new mount. It's surrounded by at least a foot of snow and all still working well. Surprising since it did fall behind on snow melt before.

btw, just checked ping times to 100.64.0.1. Two computers, side by side, an older Win 7 machine had 41ms ping, a newer Win 10 machine was 29ms. 0% loss on either.

I am very curious in what world starlink is faster than fiber. Fiber is typically approaching 1gbps, where starlink is under 100mbps.
The world where ISP service is sold in various pricing/performance tiers and is independent of the max technical threshold of the transmission medium. Fiber _can_ support 1Gb/s. That doesn't mean that even though an ISP connects your house to their network via fiber that you automatically get/pay for their top tier speeds. The ISP may have bottlenecks elsewhere in their system that reduces from max performance too.

A tad bit different then mine;

I have noticed that time of day makes a difference - here we are about 11 hours later:

True, but it also isn't uncommon for different manufacturers, their WiFi hardware, and their wifi drivers have different behaviors under similar network conditions. I've seen different vintage Samsung products behave differently. Ditto different versions of Android.

@KilroyJC there is also the option of gifting your wife an iPhone and an iPad...😀

All the best,

Peter
Update:

proposed new carrier has added the 2022 Moto G Power, so that is what Mrs will get, since she does not have to really learn anything new, since she currently has a 2016 Moto Z. Slightly different size, lighter, better battery life. BUT more plastic construction, 720 instead of 1080.

she insists I get the iPhone and retire my flip phone. Probably because she is tired of all the photography duties. . .

Exactly. Like clockwork service is diminished significantly at peak hours.
Starlink is awesome if you want to set the alarm for 2am to use it

Even at its worst, it blows the pants off the DSL. And the connection is stable. I had more dropped connections over the copper in a day that I have had in any two week period with SL - and those drops have been all under 6 seconds (except for the one 45-minute long one I mentioned last week —- and withDSL sometimes we would lose it for hours at a time)

As some mentioned recently, here. I noticed that my dish is pointed more easterly than before. A significant change in position. This is new. I will do some speed tests tomorrow.
