Standardized \"new used\" tractor check list.

Is there such a thing as a standard checklist to go over when a used tractor is bought? I know it would probably be ideal to take care of that BEFORE it's bought but I just thought of doing something like this. Does anyone know if a formal/semi-formal document like this has been made bfore? Even if it's only sitting out in cyberspace somewhere.

I'm an avid woodworker and there is a process called Dave's Dirty Dozen that documents how to clean a new table saw to get it set up perfectly. It's almost the stuff of lore on the woodnet website I visit all the time (whenever I'm not on here or now that I have one, my tractor). I haven't heard of anything like that on this site.

If it doens't exist would folks be willing to offer ideas? I could put it all in flow charts and then make it available for free to anyone who wanted it. I know I would have loved to have something like that when I was looking. I just got my tractor and it has 1100 hours on it. Even though the person I bought it from said they would change filters/fluids I would rather do it myself so I KNOW it was done and it was done RIGHT. Plus it's a good way to learn more about the machine and how it works. That's where you guys (and gals) might be able to help me.

I'd like suggestions on where to start. All I want is a pretty high level overview of what I should be looking at and checking to make sure this thing is tuned up as best as possible.

Maybe I'll start with some major sub-categories then you can break them down as you see fit. I will document all suggestions as best I can then probably come up with several different versions that can either be voted on to decide on the best or perhaps just leave a couple of "semi-generic" checklists for differnet trannies and such.

I'd like to start with mine! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Where would you start with the following information?

late 80's early 90's Kubota
Model GL21
Shuttle Shift
3 cylinder diesel engine
4WD
4 speed tranny
4 range (I think? 2 seperate Hi/Lo selectors)
4 speed PTO w/ reverse
Electronic leveling 3 point hitch
Koyker 110 FEL

Major Sub-categories (suggested)

-Mechanicals (Shafts, linkages, etc)
-Lubrication (grease, oil, etc)
-Fluids
-Electrical
-Cooling
-Engine/Glow Plugs
-Tires

Please feel free to suggest more. I think this is a good idea but I can see it getting huge. I work full time, and I have two hobbies I call kids plus woodworking and shooting so I have only a little free time. I plan to see it through though. It might take me a while but I really want to do this as I think it could really help a lot of future buyers. Especially grey buyers (though this list should and will be inclusive).

K, have at it. PM's and emails are okay too. You can use vf171ohio @ yahoo.com (delete spaces).

Re: Standardized \"new used\" tractor check list.

I'll list my "steps" whenever I get a used vehicle of any kind ...

1) clean it up ...
I'm not talkin detailin' and wax, but a good wash down to remove dirt, debris, small mammals, etc. I also like to use a can of spray degreaser and a stick brush to get large deposits of crud out for the next step

2) thorough inspection ...
I try to get a look at *everything* ... roll underneath and look for any signs of cracks in the frame, loose bolts, cut/broken wiring, etc. Take notes of what you find! Do this from every conceivable angle until you're convinced you seen every exterior part.

3) maintenance schedule ...
Starting with the most frequent schedule, go through the checklist. This will include some fluid changes, but also further "inspecting". Don't forget brakes, lights, tires, etc.

4) repairs ...
From the "inspections" above, the "todo" list might be fairly long, but some items are higher priority to deal with first. Some also might be easy to deal with (burnt out turn signal perhaps), and can be dealt with and crossed off. I just try to get the list down to a point where I'm comfortable the vehicle is safe to operate, and shouldn't leave me stranded.

5) light duty testing ...
While operating stay keen on anything that seems out of the ordinary (and make a note on the "list"). Any strange binding while operating, chattering, hard starting (hot or cold), etc ...

6) clear the list ...
Make an effort to get the list to zero items, and you can be fairly certain you've sorted out the vehicle.

Your list covers it well. One thing I'd add. Use it BEFORE you do ANYTHING to it. Find out what works and what doesn't work before you clean the first speck of dirt or loosen the first bolt.

Re: Standardized \"new used\" tractor check list.

After I read your post I went and re-read "Compact Tractor Buying And Basics", by Muhammad Chishti. Chapter 9, "What to look for when buying a used tractor", sums it up pretty well. I would just add, from my experience with an old tractor with an unknown history, it's great to get all the manuals for it. I ordered all of them from our local Kubota dealer at reasonable cost.

Re: Standardized \"new used\" tractor check list.

While I respect the right of the Muhammad Chishti to provide the information he has to those of us here on this forum I thought it would be nice to gather some general information on how to go about the process for new buyers.

That is what the purpose of this forum is for afterall, right?

I would like to get manuals for mine. Still looking. If anyone has them please let me know /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I will gladly pay reasonable costs. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Standardized \"new used\" tractor check list.

Paul, thanks for the pointer. However, my understanding is that the dealers here in the US will not help grey market tractor owners. I have not approached our local dealer about getting any parts or manuals from them for this reason. Do you think they would have access to the manuals for a GL-21? Do you know of a dealer that would and that would be willing to sell me a copy? If so please let me know, either PM or email.

If I'm not able to get a GL-21 manual I will check and see if my local dealer is willing to help me when I finally figure out what if any US market tractor mine is closest to. If not I think there are a few in Canada that are looking for US dollars.

I'm still working through the processes mentioned above I'll be sure to post whatever I come up with. It may not be as comprehensive or as elegant as Mr. Chishti's "book" but it might be enough to help a newbie like myself out when it comes time to buy a used tractor.
Thanks again.

Did I miss something? the poster wanted to know what to do *after* it was purchased not *before*?

D'oh. Didn't realize the grey market deal. That's the reason it's cheaper, I guess. Sorry.
