Of all the hundreds of guys standing in various lines in our underware at the induction center that day, only two of us were smart enough to be wanted by the Agency.... and stupid enough to sign up for the extra two years. Whisked us down to Fort Leonard Wood on an empty train before we could change our minds.... And the rest is history... [ special kind of stupid ] :)

yup, there's only a relative few of us. I enlisted for the 4 years, right up front. No regrets.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program................

sorry for the off topic.

A four year hitch was standard for the Air Force, I stayed in for seven, the last three loaned out to the DMA. Now go look that one up.

In the 60's, if you got drafted it was a 2 yr hitch. If you enlisted, it was a 3 year hitch. If you enlisted for ASA, it was a 4 year hitch. They said it was because the security clearance vetting required was long and expensive, and the training we got was costly.

You also got to yell " RA " [ regular army ] when you went into the company mess hall in basic... instead of " US " [ drafted ] or " NG " [ national guard ].. ALL THE BENEFITS..!!!! :) [ they had to keep track of how many of each they were feeding, even if they did not give you time to eat it... ]

I went in in 67 and came out in 74, you had to join the AF, Navy and Marines you only got drafted into the Army or join up on your own. Sometimes judges gave someone a choice of prison or going into the Marines to get themselves squared away. I guess they figured the other services weren't hard enough on them. I know I was in better shape going into basic than I was when I finished. They actually had a paved sidewalk around the obstacle course, which I saw all of twice. We went to the firing range exactly once. LOL Being a southern boy, I fired expert the first time out with the M16.

i have friends who joined the AF when i joined the Army. I was appalled when they told me about their basic training or lack thereof. i told them that when they put on their class A's, they looked like mailmen and bus drivers. :)

I liked all the uniforms back then compared to now, especially those dorky looking berets they all wear now. It looks a lot like a cow pie on their head. Don't think I can remember wearing my Class As anywhere or anytime, it was either fatigues or 1505s and later on they came out with the light blue shirts with trousers like the class As which were OK with me.
