Does anyone know what the name of the small individual squares that make up a bale of hay are called? I can't remember.

Around here people call them flakes or sections.

My Dad called them a "leaf", but I don't know if it is correct or not. We just understood what he meant. (Iowa=Midwest term????)

My grandfather always called them "squares" so we continue the tradition today!

I have heard them referred to as batts also.

We always called them "squares" and square bales are not square! They are rectangles.

we called them (son of a guns) cause when you see them you know the knotter aint tying knots no more

In my neck of the woods, which wasn't very big back then, I'm talking in the '50's, everyone around here called them "beats", I suppose because every time the plunger made a beat, it created a section in the bale, at least that's the only reason I could figure they were called that.
