I need to eventually some kind of spread for the BX to spread lime and fertilizer. I really want something that is 3PH mounted. I am not sure if a broadcast spreader would work for me because I have some smaller areas I need to use it in. I have looked for a 3PH drop spreader but they are expensive. What would be the best way to go?

you can angle the broadcast spreaders so they only go one way. problem is they don't spread lime very well unless it's pelletized. if there's a cheap way to spread ag lime i'd love to hear it too

I am not sure if a broadcast spreader will work I have a area that is 25' wide. Can you cut them back that much?

Good question. I'm in the same boat as you, trying to figure out what to buy.

Hopefully someone else can help out?

My probelm is my yard has a bunch of smaller areas and 1 good sized area. I don't think a pto driven broadcast would be right becasue it would be throwing fertilzer in the driveway, sidewalk or garden beds. I think they mostly throw 50'. With my I have a pull type spreader but even by my Cub cadet it was not manuverable enough for certain areas. The bx is bigger. Plus with a pull type if you back up your are applying double. That is why I was thinking of a 3ph drop spreader. The cheapest one I have seen is nearly $800 though. A walk behind spreader is out the question cause I have a big hill.

How much land are you fertilizing?

Perhaps getting a hand carry-type spreader for the small spaces, and a 3pt broadcast for the open areas.

You can get pull-type broadcast spreaders, and drop spreaders. They all should have some kind of a feed mechanism. Ideally they would be built with a ratchet so that they would not spread much when driving backwards.

I'm not quite sure where you are. Here are a couple of ideas.
8 Foot Lime & Fertilizer Spreader
FERTILIZER/LIME SPREADER

I'm sure with more hunting, more used equipment could be found. I'm seeing a few auctions, and judging by some of the auction finds that people have mentioned, that may be a way to go too.

It is hard so how much land but maybe close to 2 acres. I would maybe go for a PTO broadcast spreader for the larger area if I could find one for those kind of prices. I 'll be patient and wait for something to pop up. Then I could use walk behind for the small areas. I am used to the box store grade drop spreaders that don't have a ratchet mechanism.

Roger,
I tried to center my search around Frederick County, VA, but I guess you weren't impressed.

We are getting a little late in the season this year. You may also be able to rent a fertilizer spreader, or borrow one for this year while you're looking.

Anyway, use SearchTempest to pick up a few more local towns.

I just bought a JD 602 spreader, 2 wheel tow behind broadcast spreader, "needs a bit of work" for $300. I probably won't get it cleaned up this season, but I'm hoping that I can get it setup to pick up a couple of tons of bulk fertilizer, then tow it from the store to the field.

I thought the prices were fair enough on the ones you posted but by the time I drive there I might as well get a new one, I am about 3 hours from Richmond. I just went over 200 miles Friday to get a aerator, I never saw a 4' one for sale near me. My current spreader is on its last leg. I can limp through this spring and maybe fall. I was just asking on here to see what you guy thought so I could look for it used. I will set up search tempest/ feed demon or the craiglist app and look for used pto broadcast spreader. That sounds like you got a good deal on the JD 602.

Who makes a good walk behind broadcast spreader?

Hi Roger,

I was just going through this myself and ended up buying this Earthway broadcast spreader for my little over 2 acres of lawn. It seems a little expensive for a walk behind, but it does an excellent job. I can cover the lawn pretty quickly. The spread settings are based on a 3 mph walk. Have you looked at the pendulum spreaders? Pricey, but sound nice. I included a link to a pendulum spreader from Agrisupply to give you an idea on price. I think I will try to buy one eventually, but the walk behind will do until then. Good luck in the search.
