Company I worked for recently sold so based on my age (58) and years of service (31) there was no option but take my retirement earlier than I had planned. Offered position with new company but I haven't made up my mind if I am going to stay. With my salary and retirement I would be making more than I ever have before but I am also thinking about maybe doing something else, P.T. work, volunteering, etc. After 38 years doing the same thing it might be nice to do something else.

I can't remember who to attribute this quote to....but it went something like....For a Job find something you enjoy and you will never work a day in your life...I did that yrs. ago...Good Luck no matter what you decide...

The sooner you can retire comfortably the better. I would say that if you have a pension that you can live on till you reach SS retirement and Medicare age (perhaps you also have free medical insurance with your retirement package) then go for it. I retired early at 60 and the biggest expense for me was medical. Lucky folks get free medical with their retirement, but not with my former company.
Just look at the income, vs expenses and if it all looks ok, go for the retirement full time and do what ever you want to do. Do anything but nothing, folks that retire with nothing to do, usually don't live very long after they quit working.

i was in a similar predicament. few years back i semi retired. Had enough money saved up, why not.

Problem was none of my friends have retired. I ran out of things to do. everyone else was working.

Now im working again a few days a week. Oh well

I had almost the same exact thing happen to me at 58.My plant closed and offered a retirement deal I couldn't resist.Part of the deal included full medical until SS age.I had started my own small hobby business about five years prior so it worked out well for me. I don't make any money at it but it keeps me busy year round.

Congrats on your early retirement--you won't regret that decision.

I took the deal at my company (retire with full benefits at age 55 with 30 years or more service). Did that 17 years ago and have enjoyed every minute since.

Good luck

You are 58 years old. Medicare will not kick in until age 65. If you have been offered a salary at or above what you were making with the old company, plus health insurance look long and hard. If health insurance not included, look on the Affordable Care Exchange in your state to see what health insurance will cost per month.

It is nice to retire, but it is also nice to have the money to do something besides eat beans and potato's twice a day. You are also entering the age grouping where medical cost will go up, not down. It may also be a wise move to spend a couple hundred and sit down with a retirement specialist and let him/her review your financial options and the plus's and minus's of different scenarios.
