I would love to get a logging winch... but they don't come up in the used market much (if at all). Good luck with your clean up...

Feedback so far . . . LS is leading the pack. To all of you who worried about us newbies, you are so sweet! I phrased my post incorrectly, he had tied off the base of the tree with enough rope to be VERY FAR away when that top came down, but the little NH33 was doing all she could and best he could do was pull forward and reverse, forward and reverse to get that tree out of the woods. To those who said--don't let it fall in the woods--that's all we have behind the cabin. Good news was we took it away from the cabin--although she wanted to go that way. Bad news--it's all woods back there!
We just keep learning from the breath of experience and knowledge you guys have . . . today he read someone's post about the winches and we weren't aware you could get them for the 3 pt hitch. So yay! new ammo to look forward to, because we're shopping and taking your advice and doing it slowly and enjoying the process. I'm about to start an excel spreadsheet if you can believe it! More later . . .

3PH winches are the ONLY way to go for a tractor with PTO power. Farmi is a well known and excellent brand. I prefer my Igland 4001, already mentioned in an earlier post. It is just as high quality and may be a better value when taking into account price/value. It can do incredible amount of work that can't be matched by any other implement. And regardless of whether you stick to existing NH you already have and beef it up with a winch, or you get a new LS or whichever brand tractor, a high quality 3PH winch can make life a breeze when dealing with trees.

Here's a YouTube vid of the 5001, next model # higher than mine. It shows a paltry load of trees, it can easily pull ones 3-4 times the diameter shown, but it gives you an idea of how any 3PH winch works, and how it's attached etc. (It shows the OP using a remote control, lots of extra $$, which isn't needed at all unless you just have to have it. I've always used the attached pull cord from the side of the winch, and its served me well).

AND, a model 4001, using a clamshell snatch block, (exactly the same as mine), to change the direction of the pulled logs from the tractor at the bottom of the hill. Allows pulling from a great and safer distance at right angles to the logs being pulled. Then one would detach the choker chains and reposition them without the snatch block to pull them the rest of the way to the tractor.

Oh, wait, one more: close up on Igland's auto release snatch block, (mine is NOT self release). 6 TON capacity! Makes the job so easy it's ridiculous.

I can't help myself! This LAST one is a HEAVY DUTY PRO GRADE Winch, double drum, but it perfectly exemplifies how real serious woods logging is done by pros and how a winch is a must have tool!
Last one, I promise!!:cool2: Enjoy the vids...

I'm sure Coyote is right for someone doing serious logging. I kinda doubt the value of a true logging winch for a homeowner just cleaning their woods of a dozen dead trees though. If the dead trees are "trash" rather than lumber, Why not simply cut the trees up where they fall and haul the bits out using a grapple. Use the drawbar and chain to pull the pieces to a small clearing where the tractor can maneuver. (Truth in advertising: I've never had to get felled trees out of an area too dense to maneuver my tractor in but that's what I would do rather than spend ?$2-3K on a high quality pro logging winch.)

I never suggested buying a PRO Grade winch. I merely showed a video for purposes of what they can do and how professional logging is approached using the appropriate tools. THe other videos show the homeowner grade winches and snatch blocks.
I did find one additional video, linked below, which shows my model winch, which has a 4000# capacity, NOT 8K as the video narrator queries at the beginning of 'his' video; hence the model # 4001, NOT 8001!:confused3:
I've included it because it shows the winch on a NH about the same size as the OP's, a 30 HP or so, according to the vid OP...

I do agree IT that the basic most useful tool upgrade is likely a grapple over a winch. I'm providing the above vids as educational and informational more than pushing the OP to buy one. Since she hasn't given us any pics so far or real description of her land/terrain it's harder to have any real sense of what might work best in her particular situation...

Hey OP, second request for some pics of the layout of your woods, etc.
Thanks!

CM out.

Hey there!
tigger shades.jpg

Gotta start with pic of Tigger, here he is after blues festival.

First question: What does OP mean?

ponderoper overview.jpg

you can see the horse pasture around the house, we hit with bush hog, use a Husqvarna Zero Turn for finish work around house and pool in back.
rest is pretty thick woods.

Great dog pic.
What's the terrain around the property? Mostly flat? Hilly, etc.
Is the bordering around the main property the extent of the entire parcel, or are there additional woods/acres outside the lines that define the house, pasture, pool?
Can you show the area that you're clearing of trees, or describe where it is exactly?

Thanks.
