Pete,
I would agree with you up to a point. It seems that everything is going the way of electronics, good or bad. I can foresee the CUT manufacturers in the future going to electric over hydraulic for the 3PH. A height sensing reostat along with a servo valve would be used in lieu of the hydraulic depth control valve.
Regarding the issue of down pressure capibility, my little Allis 720 has a directional valve float position in lieu of a depth control valve as do many of the sub-compact tractors. I suspect that part of the reason is that it is much cheaper than a conventional 3PH depth control valve. Having grown accustomed to the down pressure capability, I really miss it when using the Kubota without down pressure. I think the best of both worlds would be a position control valve (electric or manual) with the capability of selecting down pressure or float. It is so handy to apply a little bit of down pressure when needed while blading for example. Yes, too much will simply cause the rear tires to loose traction or clear the ground which, by the way, is sure handy for putting tire chains on the rear. If you compare this issue with heavy equipment dozers of days gone by which were operated by cable and had no down pressure, there are some similarities. Yes, some of the old timers will say that they still prefer the cable operated dozers for one reason or another.

I had a old tractor years ago that somebody added a double acting cyl to the lower links of the 3 pt and I really miss that feature especially scrapping a driveway, it would float too had a detent in the valve it was very handy.

I could do it with a lightweight back blade then and now I have 350lbs or so on top of a 700lb box blade to do the same work.

I'm not sure as to what may have happen over the 3 years period of using the FEL, but at first when installing it there was a limit to how much weight it would lift when I could hear the pump start wining, (was around 500 lbs) or if forcing to dig more than it should I would hear the pump and back off and lighten the load, Although now it seems to have the ability to lift more , 800 lbs and the pump doesn't make any noise, it simply just won't lift the load if its too heavy, however I can rev the engine on up to have the pump spin faster and it will then lift it, but still with no noise sound from the pump, this would be considered in an adjustment of the relief valve but I haven't adjust anything, it still as it were since day one of the install of the FEL, I feel I should re-adjust it back to having limited to only around 500 lbs otherwise I'm risking damage to the tractors front end components etc, etc,

Yeah something apparently got stronger for sure in your system. I think is pretty easy to over do the front ends on these since they weren't designed to carry any extra load up front or a little extra ballast at the most. I am amazed sometimes how heavy a bucket load of dirt is when I look down and see the front tires flatten 1/2 way out.

Or the rear end get so light I have to engage 4wd to move yikes! I dont like having so much on front I need weight on back put even pulling trees out of the woods with a chain tied on the bucket driving in reverse will raise the rear too.

Here is something I do with my 2002D. Getting ready for spring planting.

That disc plow sure works well, Winston. What do you do to follow up?

Sometimes I go over it with a tandem disc to sort of break up clods and smooth out. I will go over it with my Yanmar RS1300N tiller right before planting time. Here is an old picture where I was breaking up new ground with the tiller. It works much better for me to turn it over before using the tiller.

I was installing a metal tower and needed rebar bent into a hairpin so I could pin the ground level horizontal support structures into the ground.
The FEL edge has holes in it just larger than the rebar. I stuck rebar in the hole half way, started the hairpin bend manually with a cheater bar. Then completed the bend using the FEL using down/curl pressure. Did 6 pins, handy. Started rebar hairpins into ground with sledge hammer. When stabilized, I used FEL down pressure to press all the way down. Thankfully, did not hit rock.

rock balast - load the top of my rear box grader with 3 medium sized rocks that fit into the top, 40-70 lbs, as balast, to balance loads when using the FEL since I dont want liquid in my tires; and use them in the FEL when I want the front wheels to stay on the ground; like when Im towing a heavier load uphill with the box grader hitch; I welded a reciver through the top of the box grader; I had a couple of scary experiances of losing stearing as the front wheels lifted.

Update on next years garden sight. I went over it 3 passes with the tandem disc. I didn't garden on this location last year and the native bumuda grass has taken off pretty good in spots. That is the folage you can still see. I hope all this fits in this thread ok, if not, I apologize.

Hope you sprayed that Bermuda about september!! That is the time of the year to kill it. If you did not spray your gonna have nothing but bermuda this spring. I think even spraying it you need to really hit it a few times to do a number on it.

I picked my wife up in the bucket so she could decorate the upper portion of our front yard Christmas trees....she was a pretty good sport about it, really. It was more stable than a step ladder and I put her closer to the tree.
