try some signs like :

unauthorized vehicles on property will be impounded and crushed .....

Private property , if you can't read or understand , it's your problem ....

warning ... surveillance cameras, all trespassers will be prosecuted ....

At work someone had parked/abandoned a vehicle... if the vehicle is reported stolen, the police will order a tow.

It the vehicle is simply abandoned on private property it is up to the property owner to deal with which can be expensive.

I can't tell you how many times I reported an abandoned vehicle, the officer arrives and radios in the plate or vin number and I hear the dispatcher give the officer the owner's information.

The last time, the registered owner was 2 blocks from the Hospital and based on what I heard... I walked over and knocked on the door to let the owner know the vehicle was going to be towed... in almost every case the owner removed the vehicle and no tow was necessary... and most thank me for the courtesy call...

Are you serious? So your advice to circumvent asking for the lawbreakers information is eavesdropping?

You suggest I call in the vehicle and wait around until the police arrive. Then, I position myself near his cruiser so I can listen to dispatch. I should make a point to memorize the name and address then go to the home and inform the owner I found his abandoned car on my property?

More importantly, you have done this more times than you can count?

The car has been ABANDONED! Not stolen or lost so the owner knows where the car is because more than likely HE left it there. Confronting him at his home would make first or second on my list of things "not to do".

Vehicles usually have enough metal in them to be hauled away by someone. I will forego the thanks from the guy who dumped his junk on my property, and handle it differently.

I am 100% serious and this is my standard mode of operation... I don't have hospital money to waste on $150 tows and being in a urban area all too often people think they can use the hospital parking lot as their private parking lot...

Some may have unlimited funds and like spending money... we don't.

My job as Director of Engineering is to efficiently and expediently solve problems and I have been doing so since 1991...

The confidentiality of vehicle license plates in California came about after a notorious Stalking case.

Note: California law does not prevent me from making a License Plate request at the DMV window... I have to appear, fill out a form with my driver's license information, the reason for the request and pay a fee and then wait 10 days for processing... plus the owner now has my drivers license information courtesy of the DMV...

I'm not deaf or blind and sometimes the cars are legit... we had a patient transferred to the University Hospital and the a car I called on belonged to him... just think how cold hearted that would have been... towing a patient vehicle when there was nothing the patient could do or worse... stealing his car!

I hope you are not advocating finders keepers when it comes to handling it differently... that would be stealing unless you are prepared to go through a lengthy lien procedure.

There is nothing in the law to prevent me from asking for this information... so no harm no foul.

I think I would just ask the older gentleman to give me some vehicle plate info next time he sees someone and ask local law to trace so you can talk to the trespassers.

Ownership of large tracts of land is a tricky responsibility depending on location. It is far better to be known as the owner who appreciates those who wander with respect rather than one who posts restrictions.

Other than that, you might want to be where he saw the people on Sunday and find out if it is a regular occurrence. It would be far cheaper than a high cost surveillance system.

No offense, but that has to be the dumbest thing I've ever read on this forum.

"Wander with respect"? On my property, that's called "trespassing". If they're out "wandering" on my property, then by definition, they have zero respect, either for myself or my property.

I don't have nor need (yet) an expensive security system. I have a dog who barks when strangers come down the road (I live at the end of a one mile gravel road), a gate and several obvious signs. Oh, and I'm well known for open carrying a .44 magnum wherever I go, including on my own farm. I don't get many trespassers ... oh, I'm sorry: "wanderers with respect" types.

Neither one of us needs to worry about ownership of large tracts of land though, do we? ;)

OTOH, the OP has never stated whether his land is posted or not; that should be his first step if he doesn't want people on it.

Jstpssng, I have deduced from your posts that you are a nice sort of a bloke and so would approach trespassers in a polite manner, but why does the amount of land matter?

Whilst I feel it should not be necessary to post against trespassers, I do admit to having a simple hand painted "PRIVADA" sign sticking out from a fence post plus a single wire across the entrance right next to it - with short pieces of yellow drainage pipe attached. My reason for doing this is that I have a tarmac entrance drive of 300m from the national highway. Private tarmac drives are totally unheard of in these parts, and consequently some idiot decided to put it on GPS, including a right turn at the house entrance (which is a dead end) onto a non-exostent road. If the wire is across then it is an extremely rare occurrence for anyone to mistakenly enter, but if a visitor "forgets" to put it back up then it is open house. Sure it is a slight inconvenience for me when I go out, but that is rarely more than once a week, and the inconvience of having to deal with people blindly following a GPS, or just assuming it is a public road is much worse. I have had arguments with folks wanting to park in my farmyard so they could use the river beach just below the house. Some people will just not accept that it is my land and the general public is not welcome.

I agree with FTG-05 that there is no such thing as wandering with respect. I live where I do for privacy. There is plenty of public access land in all the countries I have farmed in for those who choose not to live in a rural area. I am not a wealthy man, in fact I have a very low income, but my sole aim in life from being a child was to farm my own land. Others can buy land too if they really want too.

Wandering with respect? How sad is that. I am tired of the 'entitled' mentality. No one is entitled to wander onto my property without permission. Respect my property lines and stay on the property you own. My land is not a state park.
At a recent hunter safety course in my area, the wildlife officer was answering questions about the laws, enforcement, etc. He pointed out that most of his time is spent on complaints about hunting without permission, or trespassing. Maybe if more landowners were slightly more aggressive, there would be less 'wandering' overall.

Brothers place is surrounded on 3 sides by parkland...

Even with the private property/no trespass signs and 4-wire barbed fencing people are still wandering through with is troublesome since no one is typically home on workdays.

I have found a coupe empty shotgun shells tucked under the windshield wiper to be a very effective message.

Shoot the windshield , then the empty shells on the seat. Your too polite. :)
