So when I did my 50 hour service this summer, I put in Valvoline 10w30 conventional motor oil. This weekend, I decided to switch over to Rotella T6 full synthetic 5W40. Let me tell ya, I could barely stand to smell the thing running it stunk so bad.

I didn't spill any on the engine, that I know. But my first drive after the oil change, I definitely smelled a nasty oil smell..... I didn't add any fuel in before either so that wasn't it. I did grease the tractor really good before this so perhaps so grease dripped somewhere it shouldn't have been.

I'm not the only one...

Q: After an oil change, I get a horible, heavy oil smell. What is the problem?

From TSB 09-02-00: The odor condition is the result of certain diesel engine oil additives. These oil additives are blended with the base oil during the manufacture of the engine oil. Some diesel engine oils with the American Petroleum Institute quality rating of CH-4 or CH-4+ may be more prone to exhibiting the odor condition. The odor appears to reduce in intensity as the engine oil ages, usually after the first 300 to 500 miles following the oil change.

I heard that story from a friend. At the bottom of the (5 gal) pail of snowmobile oil he found a dead mouse.

Have heard that Rotella smells, but thought that was a thing of the past.

Never used any myself so no personal experience.

My wife can't stand the smell when I ran the conventional T-4 in the Cummins the breather tube vapor does have a smell for at least 1000 miles. Have not noticed it "as much" running the T-6 synthetic in my truck but the wife still does.

I have to use Delo or Delvac in her Cummins powered Ram. She hates the Shell smell that much.

Worst smelling oil for me is when a friend blew up 3 different engines when we were kids spinning rod bearings then punching holes in the blocks when rods broke. There is a real 'Special' smell when dirty oil gets cooked leading to total destruction.
