Hi Folks,

Central WI here, 4.5 acres, many, many obstacles. Just moved in and looking for a late season deal. I will post this same ? over in General Lawn and Garden as well. MOD isn't important, although bagging might be. I have it narrowed down to basically 2(ish) mowers.

1. X700/720/724 series with a 60" 7-iron deck.
2. Z720A with a 60" 7-iron deck.

In general, here are some questions:

  • what is the difference between 7-iron and 7-iron PRO?
  • starting with the x720, they have fuel injection/liquid cooling but I cant tell if the z720 does have EFI? (it looks air cooled)
  • they dont list a bagging attachment for the z720, is that correct?
  • i dont see a residential warrantly listed for the Z720series?

I would probably buy a used X series, 2010-2012, under 100 hours for about $8,500-$10,000 with balance of 4 year warrantly.

A local dealer currently has a new 2012 Z720 for about $7,500.

Any thoughts or opinions appreciated. Obviously, they are two different styled machines. I currently hire a lawn service and the owner/operator has used each style on my lawn and thinks it's a fairly even discussion. I realize the X can be more versatile but I have yet to really pin down another significant use for it.

thanks in advance.

The Pro deck is available on the 900 series Z's. Basically it's beefier for commercial use,and has the Mulch on Demand feature.

Once you have a tractor, all sorts of things to do with it will come to light.

I take it,you don't feel the need for 4WD?

I would keep this in mind. A zero turn is a grass cutter.........period! Sure they make things to attach to them, but it's NOT a tractor. Secondly, they are very unstable on hilly/slopey ground.

IMO,it's a no brainer. Go with what is much more versatile. You won't regret it.:)

I had a 2008 kubota pro 326 ZTR (60 inch deck)while I liked it,s speed for mowing all it was is JUST lawn mower.Last year I bought a JD X740(diesel engine) with a 60 inch 7 iron deck.Needless to say I have been more than impressed with this unit as you have many more options than just mowing grass.coobie

Will you be keeping the 202 at the new place? Can it manuever around the obstacles you speak of easily enough to be of real benefit for lawn work? I ask these questions as I have found it helps to have a small 4x4 aws garden tractor for this type of work. Looking forward a few years buying the more feature laden x749 may eliminate the need for a larger tractor after you have the place situated to your liking.

Yep, I've been giving serios thought to trading my EZ-Trak 655 and JD345 in for a X740 with a 7-Iron mower. The Z655 is a great mower, but that's all it is. I still use my 345 about 50% of the time. The only thing I don't like about the 655 and the 345 as well, is they both love gasoline. I purchased 15 gallons of no-ethanol gasoline yesterday to support them. I should have bought a diesel!
