Al,

I guess that would depend on the design of the snowblower. I just got a
64" Frontier that has two shear pins. One is on the pto shaft near the rear coupling and another on the auger shaft itself. Personally that is enough for me but I could see the convenience of having a slip clutch to prevent having to change out shear pins throughout the blowing season.

I have never seen a slip clutch on a snow blower myself. Like mikey said all blowers have two shear bolts that seem to do the trick. And being in frozen conditions all the time, I would be worried that a slip clutch might not work properly.

Thanks guys, it was just a thought that the slip clutch might just be an easier way than having to replace shear pins which seem to snap on a regular basis when blowing snow on gravel driveways.

The key is prep. Make sure that all of the rocks that are bigger than a golf ball are 5' from the edges of the drive and get all of the sticks picked up before the snow starts flying.

I have to agree as I've only seen shear bolts on snowblower pto shafts. I would think that it would be quite frustrating to have a slip clutch slip when you need full load capacity.

Or buy your shear bolts by the gross!

PS, I always keep 12 of each size in the tool box. My impeller bolts often shear even on ice chunks, but better frozen fingers than scrapped impeller.

Note that a golf ball sized rock jammed between the impeller and housing will shear a bolt.

Our driveway is 2/3 of a mile long and unfortunately has many rocks that seem to want to jam the secondary fan on my Buhler/Allied blower. I've become rather adept at changing out shear pins as I seem to go through 2-3 pair every time I plow. While I don't have a problem doing this, my wife does not have the physical strength to pull the shaft off of the pto, change the pins, and get the shaft back onto the pto. Because I'm often traveling, the pleasure of plowing often falls on her shoulders. I've been thinking that a slip clutch might be the answer but can't for the life of me figure out where to get one that will fit on the Buhler blower. Anybody got any suggestions?

In order to ease your issue with over size cobbles the fix would be to install a very stiff piece of concrete reinforcement mesh that is 2 by 4 inches and place a second piece over that one.



The best way to accomplish this is to do the following;


You need:

two pieces of 2 by 2 angle iron to bolted to the sides of the snow blower where you attach 4 pieces of strap iron to the snow blower-

2 of which are used to make the lower frame to hang the reinforcement mesh on the angle iron and the second straps to secure the mesh in place with through bolts and large flat washers.


One standard piece of reinforcement mesh will be enough for this but the cutting will be time consuming so it would be easier to have the steel mesh seller use his bolt cutters to cut it for you making 4 pieces being 6 inches tall having 2 for spares etc.

That way the stones will be pushed aside under or forward etc.

You will probably have fewer problems after the mesh is installed with the stap iron and angle iron for a frame.

The limited slip friction disc clutch will be an easier method to manage things after you install the mesh at the base of the blowers skid plate.

Sorry to be such a knob but I didn't see any pto shafts on either of those sites. I'm very much a novice so if someone could post a link to a shaft with a friction clutch on it or a friction clutch that I could add to my existing shaft I'd be most appreciative. The blower is a Buhler/Allied 60" 3 point.

Not such a good idea for us as our driveway gains about 600 feet in elevation. Packing it down, results in one very slippery driveway, especially on the final grade which is much steeper than I'd like. Also, the surface isn't as flat as I'd like but has become slightly rutted over the past 5-6 years so that there is a hump in the middle. When I plow I tend to scrape that down to the gravel long before I get the material off of the tire tracks.

I'm still hoping someone can point me in the right direction so that I can either purchase a shaft with a friction clutch on it or a friction clutch that can be attached to my existing shaft.
