I am widening a single stage snow blower to fit my tractor. I have the shell done and the auger is fit up. I am having trouble finding information on how fast I should spin my auger. With the creeper gears on my machine I can travel real slow but what RPM do I need to "throw" the snow out of the chute? Of course this is a do it yourself project and the blower is a retrofit from something else.

A mile a minute isn't too fast to blow snow. (might be fast for your auger though)

Do the math on the auger diameter (Pi X D) and see what drive combination might come of it. Somewhere around 1000-1500 rpm is my bet.

What was the the fan to auger ratio of the original blower? I wonder what the ratio is of a comparable unit like you re making? Would the below work?

Let's say you had a 38 inch blower and for 1 revolution of the auger you get 3 out of the fan. Then you increase the width to 48 inches. That's a 26% increase in width. Increasing the auger speed by 26% would give you 3.78 rev of the fan for 1 of the auger. on the wider unit.

If the OP really has a single stage as stated, there wouldn't be a fan, would there? Isn't a single stage just a quick auger?

It is a single stage. No fan. I am leaning towards starting at about 800 rpms and the working up if I need to. My concerns are, if it is too slow it will not clear snow, too fast and things start to come apart. I started with a 32" MTD lawn mower mount that was given to me and now I widened it to 60". I work as a welder/millwright so the mechanics are not too hard. Information is the tough part
