I have had good luck with the snatch blocks available from WT Sherrill. Sherill They have a good selection at reasonable prices. I have found their snatch blocks to be far superior to the cheap steel models available from Northern, Harbor Freight or similar places.

Yup $$, but it works great and you know it won't break. Don't overlook the benefits of self releasing.

Andy is right. $245 is alot of money but you are already doing a very dangerous job and you should give yourself every advantage. Think about what the cost would be if you got hurt by a block that fails. Lost work time, an ER visit, worse. Suddenly $245 is not that much.
I plan to get that block myself sometime, my own need for it right now is not that great.

Most 4WD/Jeep places carry snatch blocks. Warn has a pretty simple model that should work pretty well.

I got to agree with that.Also think what you got invested in tractor, winch, chainsaw. Beleive me 245 bucks is going to seem like squat when you are laying in that hospital bed or you got one of them trees arcross the hood of the 4630. A guy one told me that it don't cost but a dollar more to go fisrt class. Be a pro.

( John -- You got it. The crowns are interlocked just enough to prevent that initial movement I need to get them going the way I want...and since this time of year we typically have a light breeze in the tree tops I like the extra safety factor of the winch. )

How about leaving the tractor on the logging road, use another tree and comealong to get it on the ground. Cut it into manageable sections, and then run a long cable to those sections to get to the road. Or is that too far from the road???

Some of those professional tree guys can take a tree that is leaning sharply downhill and cut it so it spins half way around and falls up hill.

Just wondering where the value stops vs. price? In other words, how much better would the snatch block be if it cost $999 or $2000? If you find a load rated set that is sturdy enough for your task you should be fine, somewhere in the $100 to $200 range. After that, they must be gold plated. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
