SNAKE IDENTIFICATION HELP

In Edmond, OK. There was no rattle. The snake was taken to a nearby field and released.

As you can see in the picture, this snake was approx 6 feet long. Not one I would like to see again.

Wouldn't know about poisonous or not, but first thing it reminded me of was a medical symbol

You're right, it does look like a medical symbol. Maybe it was trying to tell us something.

I am almost certain that was a water-moccasin/cottonmouth and definitely poisonous. No harm in letting it go but I would be concerned if I had young kids or pets around. Worth a closer look to see if it had some friends. Here is a link with a good picture. Take Care.

Thanks for the info. I consider all snakes as poisonous, but I usually let them go when I come across one. It just better not return.

I thought so to it was/ is a cottonmouth.As I stated in perm.#5
Our backyard borders Fla. Everglades seen many a 6'+ cottonmouth's.
Also seen-em many a time in pairs.
Even seen-em mating(big ones).Around here some are even curious you'll be standing on canal bank or somewhere and they will come towards you instead of like most snakes slithering away from you.Don't know if it was a cottonmouth,bull or what but if that was a cottomouth from around here you would't have been able to transport him/her with out a tussle unless it was DOA.

Can't tell definitively from the photo. It does look to have a triangular shaped head larger than its neck and pits between its nostril and eyes so I would categorize it as a pit viper. Bull snakes I've seen have a head about the same size as its body width. As I stated above, this seems but only seems to be evident in your picture. If it coiled to attack and opened its mouth for you to see a milky white coloring then its a water moccasin/cotten mouth. Also , when they swim, pit vipers float entirely on the surface. If it is a cotton mouth, its one big one. Largest cotton mouth I've ever seen was about 4'. Patterns and coloration change from one snake to the next even amongst the same species so any color or pattern is not a safe way to judge a snake more so than its conformation
