John Deere 3005, 110TLB
I have a John Deere 3005 that puffs light gray/ bluish smoke and runs a little weak for the first 1 or 2 minutes after startup. This occurs at all temperatures, but its more when its colder. The tractor has around 200 hours on it, and after it warms up runs cleaner. Ordinarily I would just assume this is just how the engine is, especially when its cold. The exception is that my dad also has an identical 3005 with 100 hours on it and it will smoke for only 1 or 2 seconds at startup, and seems stronger, sooner. These tractors sit in the same garage right next to one another, so the temperature is the same for both when started. I drained the fuel and replaced it with fresh, thinking it was the problem, but no real change. Any ideas?

Try running a good dose of fuel conditioner/injector cleaner for a while. My guess is you got a dose of water and crud in your fuel. Did you change the filter too?

Hiya,

Grey/blue smoke out of a Diesel at cold start is from lack of temp in the cylinders to fully support combustion of the fuel. Verify your preheat/glow plug system is operating properly and you are following the recommended starting procedure in the owners manual.

There is also the possibility that the fuel you are using has a very low cetaine rating, that would cause incomplete burning of the fuel at low temperatures. You can try a cetaine additive if you still have a cold start issue after verifying the cold start system.

Well I ran some diesel injector cleaner through it and it is burning much cleaner. The real test will be starting it cold tomorrow after its had all night to get good and cold. Hopefully its fixed.

After sitting all night to cool, I started it up this morning. Same bluish smoke, although it only did it for maybe 15-20 seconds. Better, but still not like the other 3005. I assume its dirty injectors since the injector cleaner fixed some of the problem. Is there a better way of cleaning them?

It takes many hours of running a good conditioner to really clean the injectors. The only quicker way is to remove and take to an injection shop. I would run it for a while first.
