Smokey 5103

I cranked my tractor after it sat for a few days and it billowed white smoke, ran rough (barely ran), cleared out after a few seconds and I idled it up. After about 10-15 seconds it ran fine. Is this common? It did stay rather cold here a few days and from past experiences with diesel generators I think this is normal. After a short warm up, the tractor ran fine. I guess I am asking if this is normal, just a little skeptical b/c the tractor only has 25 hrs and is about 4 months old. Thanks for the input.

I don't think it is of concern while you experience colder temps. That model doesn't come with any factory pre-heater or block heater, unless installed by the dealer. These new engines are acting different in a lot of ways, due to the design to meet emission requirements. Ask somebody with the large frame compacts, 4120 up thro the 4720, and they will tell you that these are nothing like the old yanmar engines in the 4510-4710 tractors.

The smoke is from incomplete combustion, my 990 does the same thing I just let it warm up for a few minutes before I take off and get to work.

I can get smoke too (with the Yanmar diesel) if I don't hit the glow plugs long enough, or if the previous time I ran the tractor I didn't get it good and warm before shutting it down.

As long as it clears up after warming up, I would treat it as a normal condition. The incomplete combustion comment was right on.

Appreciated hearing about the comment from Dutch. I think many of our engine experiences are changing based on the excitement from the EPA and the regs they hand down. Once such an organization exists, it will continue to come up with new restrictions just to justify their existence, if for nothing else. Happens with all govt. agencies.

Yep, some white smoke is normal as the temps drop. I think that's an EPA Tier 2 engine, which is the newest requirements. Nothing to worry about.

That 5203 is a good machine! I generally try to park my tractor in the barn when it's callin for cold.

My brother's 5103 does the same thing. It is normal. Most diesels will billow white smoke on startup if they are cold. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area.

You can loosen the injection pump, turn it slightly clockwise, and retighten. Advances the timing and white smoke should clear right up. Not a rare problem with 5003 series tractors. Happened on about 20-30% of the 5003's we sold.

Mark the pump and housing before loosening any bolts and you'll have a "reset" in case you turn it too far.

i am also interested. my 5203 isn't blowing out any white smoke that i recall when it hasn't been ran in awhile. i get more of a light black smoke when it first starts up but only for 1 second. maybe it's due to not getting that cold in SC? although we did get snow this year:laughing:

My 5203 is a 2004 model - one of the earlier ones without a turbo. It has a Stanodyne fuel pump with a "cold start advance" to automatically advance timing when the engine is cold.

This spring, I found the wiring from the cold start advance switch / thermostat pulled loose -- likely from a branch or limb. I reattached it without any trouble and tucked it a bit deeper behind the fuel pump.

I don't know if the newer 5X03's have a cold start advance, but I thought I'd mention it.

how did it run with out it plugged in? did it smike when it started with it unplugged

I discovered the disconnected wiring when doing a visual check this spring. I repaired the wiring before starting the tractor, so I didn't get to see how it would have behaved with the wiring disconnected.
