Smoked a chicken

I had a round charcoal BBQ that I did rotiserie (sp?) chicken on but got rid of it. Now I wouldn't mind having another and for whatever reason, those things are stupid expensive!

Nice to have that thing making your mouth water for a couple of hours before dinner. And if you can't smell it, you can hear it. That's when you wish you had close neighbors!

We use the Ronco counter top rotisserie a lot. I thought it would be junk; "as seen on TV; set it and forget it". 6 years later and it still gets used at least once a week. Makes awesome rotisserie chick!

Most of those greasy kitchen gadgets are a pain to clean. The BBQ you put back in the corner of the woodshed!lol

Rotisserie chickens from the grocery store are so cheap it's not worth the effort to do them at home any more... we will do stuffed cornish hens but they are some work getting stuffed birds on the spit and secured...

We also like to rotisserie small beef sirloin tips...by nature they are ideal for putting on a spit...and they cook amazingly fast (rare 140* center)...leave the lid open on the grill and the aroma is amazing it will have the hounds drooling...!

Because of the rotisserie almost all the moisture stays in the roast as it never has time to settle and escape...the Au Jus can be collected to thicken for gravy after the meat is rested and sliced...

Ours go on sale every Thursday. $9.00 cdn. Cheap meal (including the cats) and leftovers for sandwiches. Here, it seems the flavor of store cooked chickens is the same at every store and unchanged for decades.

The home made ones do have a little more smokey BBQ flavor, but yeah, for the effort it's hardly worth it. But like I said, it's also the anticipation as much as the meal!

All the grocery stores started frying or rotisserie chickens when they realized they could cook and sell them when the sell by dates elapsed...

Small chickens at Wal mart are $5-$6...ones at chain grocery are bigger birds and $6-$7...they generally have them with one of three different rubs...bbq, lemon & pepper, garlic and herb etc., etc...

We tend to eat them in stages.

We'll eat the prime first. Couple of days later we'll pick the carcass and chop or shred the meet for chicken salad, chicken tacos, chicken something...

Then it goes in the stock pot. Sometimes a base for chicken soup, sometimes for stock.

My wife puts the stock in ice trays, freezes, and then in ziplock bags. She's got it figured out for how many cubes equals a cup of stock. Works great when you need some stock.

We like doing our own. It is easy. And, we can use whatever rub we want.

The store ones are ok if you're in a hurry. IMHO :D
