I'm leaning real heavy toward a Kioti tractor and I just wondered what's the smallest one you'd feel comfortable sqaure baling with? No hay wagon, just the baler. Definately gonna be a 4wd. Most all land is flat or slightly rolling with a few steep places. I am currently doing all my hay work with a 1975 Massey Ferguson 135. DK 40 or DK 45?

definately a DK. 40 will probably be ok. What baler will you be using and what is it's PTO requirements ?

Hi

I have baled hay with a Ford Super Dexta, i think for memory they were 45hp. I have also baled hay with many other much bigger tractors. This experience has showed me the bigger the HP the better the bale makeing. With the smaller tractor sometimes you get a fluctuation in engine RPM and many balers under these conditions the knoters start to not tie properly.

We have run our JD kicker with a Farmall A. As long as the baler has a flywheel, it will overcome the horsepower deficiency. Remember, the plunger arm will rock the tractor back and forth, so you will feel it.

The baler I am currently using is a IH McCormick model 46. We have discussed buying one a lot newer and more reliable so I can buy a used baler that will fit the tractor later.

We have a well used 334 JD. I think it's ran about 500,000 bales. We took the hydraulic kicker off because it's so dangerous. As long as you keep the knotters clean and oiled and a machine greased, they run a long time. Basically what screws up a kicker bailer is the bushings that are in the needles and knotter wear out and the slop will cause a mis-tie. The factory bushings are steel. I have machined new bushings and inserted a bronze bearing. They last much longer that way.
I don't know much about Kioti's, except that they are orange, like Kubota. I would get a minium of 40 pto horsepower, however. At least then when the hay gets "tough" you won't work the tractor real hard. Another thing, you will need at least 40 pto horses if in the future, you decide to round bale.

You really think 40 pto hp will round roll? I looked at some specs on those small round rollers and they say 35 pto hp, but I have a hard time believing that. I may want to round roll in the future so that's a real consideration.

Yep.

I used to do it with a 3710 Kubota. That is 32 pto. I upgraded to a 5030. The HSTC is 42.5 pto. Enjoy the pictures.

Here is another. The tractor is not really working hard. The ac is great!! This picture is worth a thousand words. Needless to say, I am not getting covered with chaff and the stereo is great. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
