I've been using TurboTax Deluxe for quite a few years with no problems or complaints, but last year I simply could not get it to install and work on my computer, even after a lengthy phone call to Intuit's technical support. Both I, and their technical support folks, thought perhaps I just had a defective CD, so to check that, I installed it on my daughter's computer and it worked just fine. I eventually just re-formatted my hard drive, and re-installed all my software, and that fixed the problem.

So this year, I recently installed TurboTax Deluxe, installation seemed to proceed normally, but at the end when I tried to open TurboTax it wouldn't start the program. I simply shut down and restarted the computer and it appears everything is working right.

However, when I run Norton SystemWorks 2004 "One-button checkup", the "Program Integrity Scan" now shows 1 error and the "details" show:

( "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Professional\RunTime\0701\Intel32\DotNetInstaller.exe" cannot access a necessary file, "mscoree.dll." )

Does anyone have a similar problem or have any idea what's happened?

I just installed TurboTax Premier for year 2004 on my Win 98SE system with no problems. The system already had last years TurboTax installed.

It looks like a DLL is not installed/registered properly or did not get copied to your system. However, that file is not on my system.

Have you downloaded and installed the .NET Framework from Microsoft? That is what it looks like it is missing. Looks like Intuit wrote it expecting that, but if you hadn't installed it that could be the problem. It is kind of a large "patch" but it is listed under the optional ones when you go to the Microsoft Windows Update website. Once you install it, run Windows Update again, this time there will be another large download - there is a Service Pack for what you downloaded (I believe it will be listed under critical updates list time).

Hope this helps ya Bird.

Looks like you were right on the money, Jim. Thanks a lot; that seems to have corrected the problem. And as MadReferee said, that file (mscoree.dll) was not on my computer, but it is now.

Do yourself a favor and don't buy any more of Intuit's malware.

I used TurboTax for a couple of years until they installed some secret malware that monitored CD writers. Thousands of people suddenly found that their computers slowed down and in many cases they could not write CD's any more.

Fortunately I had not installed my copy when I read about it and sent it back. I will never buy another Intuit product again. They finally fessed up to their trick but I simply do no trust anyone who would pull a stunt like that and try to hide it from the users.

I now use TaxCut and it works great. You can import Quicken files into TaxCut.
This article and and this site describes some of the problems people have had with TurboTax.

Thanks btolle!

I used TurboTax for several years up until 2002. I stopped using the program due to some major changes in my revenue. I had seriously considered using it this year...until now.

I have used Turbo Tax for the last 6 or 7 years including this year for personal and both of my businesses. Never had any problems of any kind.

And I will use it next year too.

I checked these links as a long time user of Intuit products and found that the "spyware" is merely a program to try to prevent you from making illegal copies of their installation CD. I don't really have a problem with that and never experienced any of the alleged issues.
