Hello All,

I have a M4-071 with the Kubota 3rd function valve. I just acquired a bucket grapple (dual grapple arms). The 3rd function valve has them operating very quickly. Is there any way to reduce the speed of the grapple arms? It seems adding a flow control valve seems to really be the only way. if that is the case and I need to use a flow control valve, does anyone have a recommendation for the unit to use?

thanks in advance

Hope experts will respond as I have limited experience with my experiments.

Try advice from an hydraulic shop? There are orifice plates that go into fittings to slow flow. Quick and easy.

For adjustable control I have used a throttling needle valve. You need a hard seat since you don’t need a shutoff. There are also veiner control valves that control in one direction but have full flow the opposite. Surplus center or discount hydraulics have descriptions.

Not sure your valving now, electric solenoid? Bumping the switch is too fast? Know your flow?

Right size grapple? The skidsteer grapple on the M59 has big cylinders is quick but have gotten use to it.

Just a simple inline flow control valve should do the trick just fine.

Either mount it on the valve side or on the quick disconnect side. One on each line so you can adjust the flow for extend and retract if ever need.

Something like this: 1/2 NPT 15 GPM Prince WFC-800 In-Line Flow Control | Flow Control Valves | Hydraulic Valves | Hydraulics | www.surpluscenter.com

Just make sure you get something with higher flow capacity than your system, in case you'll ever need the max flow of the system available. I believe your tractor has 16 GPM accordingly to TractorData.

Put a restrictor disc in the feed hose fitting where it threads on to the actuator valve.

All my TnT cylinders from Fit Rite Hydraulics have/had restrictors. New ones are built into the ends of the hoses. Just a plug with a hole the size of a pencil lead or something. If it's to slow, you can just drill it out a hair bigger. Continuous use would overheat Hydraulics, but TnT or a grapple don't get that much cycling.

This is what I provide for my customers.
Depending on the diameter of the cylinders.
2" dia get .030 orifice, 2 1/2" dia get .045, and 3"dia get .060.

If you don't want to make them, you can purchase these to install on the grapple hoses.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I appreciate the feedback.

Using smaller hose works great too - can put it on one side or both.

The but end of the cylinder moves the most fluid & would have the most effect. The rod decreases fluid volume on the rod end. Restricting the most volume trying to move will slow things the most.
