Backhoe SLOW STARTER SOMETIMES ???

/ SLOW STARTER SOMETIMES ??? #11
Would it be an intermittent though? ThatS what Im having a problem with. I would think it would be consistent with the dragging if it was the starter. I did notice the positive cable smoking when we tried to start it last night so my gut feeling is high resistance. The father in law said we can soak it in a bucket with a couple gallons of Coca Cola... I told him to stop being cheap and spend the 50 bucks on welding cable and lugs

I believe your gut feeling is spot on. If could be corrosion, loose connection or defective cable

well, i am only loosing .04 volts through the cable.. i had 12.78 at the battery side, and 12.74 at the starter lug, so I don't think it is a cable issue. I am going to replace the battery end terminal, just because it has a little more "slack" in the terminal than I would like, and give us the quick disconnect option to disconnect the battery when the machine is going to be parked for extended periods. I didnt have a second hand nearby today to help me do a voltage drop test when trying to start the machine, but hopefully I can do that tomorrow. Our dozer starter rebuild should be done tomorrow, and we are going to take the spare we have for the 410C to get rebuilt. I know this is going to come down to something stupid. I have removed all terminals and connections between the starter and the batteries and cleaned them, as well as the terminals, and posts on the battery. the only other thing I havent thought to do is remove the ground and clean that all off real good again

If the cable smoked, you can bet on a high resistance. If it's still turning slow with a full charge battery when you do volt drop tests, the .04 might become more than 2 with the increased amp draw. Alligator clips are handy when there's a shortage of hands.
