I went to move some snow yesterday with my HST 4310. I put it in 4 wheel drive. The front tires were spinning, didn't seem to have any rear wheel power. Any thoughts? PS just got my "new" transmission.

Did you engage the Differential Lock by chance? That may help with your problem.

Yes, I did, not much help.

OK, how were you moving snow, with your 4n1 as a dozer? Turf tires should be about the best choice for snow n ice. (like I would know...) I bet you were in one of those chain only moments. But, I think I hear you wonderin' if there isn't a transmission issue, as well...

Keep in mind that when you DON'T engage the diff lock, only one tire will likely spin, at 2X the normal speed (normal open diff function). If you're in 4WD and one or both front tires are spinning, at least one rear tire MUST be spinning (at 2X speed) or or both rears at normal speed. And of course if you lock the rear diff then at least three tires must spin (both rears and one front).

Having only the fronts spinning w/o the rears is definitely a transmission problem. Does the tractor move normally in 2WD using the rears only? Hope your "new" trans is OK!

You need chains. If your area was like mine, there was at least a quarter to half inch of ice under the snow. It is still there, unless we have a substantial thaw today. Unlikely 4WD alone would be enough, particularly with turf tires. Suggest getting chains for the rear and see how it goes.

Was the parking brake on?
