I have a JD 4010 and a 4' KK rotory cutter. I went to start the PTO and the engine jerked but the cutter just jumped a little and a sqwealing noise started coming from the engine area. It stopped then I had no forward/reverse either. I broke the roll pin that connects the engine to the driveshaft that goes to the transmission! I think it was broken and slipping way before I got the cutter because I would occasionally hear a sqwealing noise from that area when mowing in heavy grass. The cutter must have been enough to put it over the edge. Anyway, I got that fixed and got a slip clutch to go on the PTO to hopefully soften the blows a little. How should I go about adjusting it? I am sure it is probably adjusted for a larger tractor, mine only has 18hp. I have searched a lot on this but am still confused. Should it slip some when the cutter is engaged? It hits pretty hard and has killed the engine when at idle, I don't want to break anything else. I do have the shear pin that came with the cutter installed also but I am afraid I would probably kill the tractor or break something else before the pin broke.

first, make sure the shear pin is grade 2. Anything stouter will likely do more harm than good while you're getting the clutch adjusted.

If yours is the type with 8 bolts and 8 springs, I might be able to help with the adjustment. If so, please confirm the PTO horsepower of the 4010. Not engine horsepower or brake horsepower - PTO horsepower.

I have adjusted the slip clutch for my tiller by;

Loosening of all the springs till impliment will not rotate
Run in this position for 10/20 seconds
Evenly tighten springs a little and check to see if you get rotation
Keep doing this till impliment rotates
Try impliment in field conditions for several minutes and then check to see if clutch is warm/hot
If so tighten a little more and repeat till impliment can be used without clutch getting warm
It should now be adjusted.

If clutch slips it will start to smell and get hot. It can't be adjusted when hot.
When tightening springs 1/2 turn at a time may be all that is required.
After use store slip clutch inside

Greg g, I have the bolt that is supplied with the cutter that they say is a grade 2 bolt. The pto HP is 14 @ 3000rpm.

Egon, I was thinking of doing it similar to the way you did yours.

Thanks, but I still need to know if it's the type slip clutch with 8 bolts and 8 springs. That's the only one I have a torque chart for.

Yes it has 8 bolts and 8 springs.
