Chipper Slasco Chipper

Don't know a thing about them, but I question just how much they can do since it only requires 8HP. 3 1/2" isn't much of a chipper really. I'm not sure what their prices are, but you may be able to get a better chipper/shredder than this chipper only that doesn't do as much. They make no mention of a PTO shaft being included, and the picture does not show any pins in the hitch. John

I have coresponded with Salsco many times. I think one must look at the larger chippers they produce. They have a good reputation in the chipper industry just mainly on the east coast. The one thing I find interesting, if you email for info, Sal himself answers

The Jinma 6" PTO woodchipper is a great chipper for the money,I have sold around a 100 of these units with very little problems,mostly operator error.They are semi-self feeding,easy to hook up, durable,so the chinese quality belts are not the greatest,you can replace them with US for under $ 50.00 .For $ 1,599.00 you can get a 6" woodchipper.Almost every other brand on the market is twice that amount. I work hard for my money and don't see spending $ 3,500.00-4,500.00 for a woodchipper when you can get something that will do the same job for half

Roy, the person is apparently looking for a woodchipper,I was giving him another option that may save him some money,he may not have known about the other chippers ,maybe he did. I was not pushing one over the other just explaining the cost differences.Some can afford Mercedes some Fords & Chevys

I have one very similar to the 600... It runs off a 5 hp Honda, probably a transplant, and sits on a self contained trailer ( 3'W x 4'L). It's old, old, old but still chips great. Sharpened the blades recently and changed out the bearings. No problems getting parts from SALSCO. I use it to get to small jobs that I can't justify hooking up my VALBY 140 for, real handy and solid construction. It's overbuilt just like their big ones. I paid $400 at an auction about 6 yrs ago.

I spoke with Dick at Salsco on friday.

I have a customer that I have gotten several Straw Blowers for from Salsco ($7000). Nice units well built.

I inquired about the chippers and was told the 4 or 6 inch will suck the limbs up. Some other brands of these pto chipper shredders leave alot to be desired.

I have not ruled out a Jimma as of yet. Here is my thinking.

No harm, no foul on the Jimma Input... I read the Chineese Chipper review... Excellent info.

I like the idea of Salsco as they make industrial grade units. I live in Connecticut and grew up in Cheshire... Salsco is in Cheshire so I'm there often...

My concern about the Jimma units is that 20 years from now you'll have a hard time getting parts. I may be wrong but would hate to bet on it.

To me 6 inch wood is firewood. The Salsco 600 is retailed at 1695.00 and can be had for less. I can get one from a local dealer in my town. It weighs 400 lbs vs 850lbs for the Jimma.


The Little Salsco will nicely fit in the corner of my barn, the Jimma is much larger.

To me right-sizing the tool in terms of use, maintenance, and maneuverability means higher saftey.

The 850 lbs Jimma can get a little heavy for the back of a Kubota 2910, possibly making it dangerous on uneven ground. Also the little Salsco is small enough on the back of my machine to make my way through the woods on my property for clearing under brush.


Are my reasonings misguided?

I think that you are using your head in figuring out what you will be doing, size of unit, maint., ect. The Jinmas are heavy and bulky and if you don't need anything that big don't buy one.The Jinmas come into play when you are looking at a 3,500.-4,500 chipper with 6" capacity. And getting a Jinma for Half the cost. Sounds to me that you have done your research and found the right size equipment for your needs

I called my local dealer and he carries two brands, Salsco and Wallenstein.

The Salsco is belt driven with a 4 to 1 ratio running the flywheel at 2160 RPM. The Wallenstein is direct drive running the flywheel at 540.

He said the Salsco throws the chips much farther.

He also said the Salsco has changes the design on the 600 relative to the infeed chute location. It will look more like the Wallenstein.

That would make it bulkier and I'm not sure I would like that as much.... They said the downside of the Salsco is that you have to lift all the brush up to the chute, but it strikes me that that is what gives you the gravity feed..

Anyway... Thats what I've gotten so far...

Cmhyland - I know you didn't ask about the Jimna, but being a retired dirt farmer on a limited budget, we bought a Jimna chipper a year ago, and have been very pleased with it. We've checked the knives and settings, and so far the knives are still sharp. We also burn wood, and usually most of the wood run through the chipper is 3 inches or smaller. Like any other piece of equipment, you sort of have to learn it's limitations. We've found the Jimna 2425 tractor and chipper/shredder is a very sweet set up. We've run a lot of brush and sapplings through it, as burning brush piles is out of the question. The punch line is - yes, there may not be any parts available in 20 years, but how soon does it pay for itself?

Seriously, thanks for the post - I'm thinking about the JN6 for what sounds like the same use you have. I was curious how well it worked feeding brush into it (we have a lot of briars around here).

The Valby seems to be a nice unit... Although my neighbor had one and didn't like it... He said it jammed with chips all the time... I suspect that was a setup issue though...

He had bought it used. He sold it without telling me... I would have bought it myself... He sould it for 1800.00.

Those units new are over 4K. The issue for me is they are really big and bulky... I'm looking for something smaller and more compact.

I found out that the Salsco 600 design is changing and will look more like the wallenstein....

We'll have to see what happens.
