Single cylinder engine rpm measure

I have a Kohler 10 hp single cylinder 4 cycle motor that I want to check the rpm. I know there was a thread posted ?????

You can buy a handheld mechanical tachometer and simply press the tip against the center of the shaft:

They can be pricey to buy, they make electronic ones which are much cheaper.
