My parking brake fell off, that pin came out of the mount. So I took the floor board off and removed the floorboard mount to reweld the pin. While I had it off, I noticed that that roll pin on the shuttle shift lever had worked it's way almost all the way out. So I tapped it back in with a small hammer. I then noticed that the lock nut on the shuttle shift rod was loose as was the center adjuster (looks like a tie rod adjuster). I turned the adjuster (by hand) until most of the play was gone. Of course you know what comes next...

Now the shuttle shift won't go into reverse. It worked before I took the floorboard off and played with the mechanism. I tried loosening the center adjuster back to where it was before but it still doesn't work, I tried adjusting the cable a half inch both ways and no luck.

I can shift into forward and neutral and the shifter feels much better then it did before but no reverse.

1) Shuttle shift worked before I gently tapped in the roll pin
2) The mechanism isn't hitting anything

Lets suppose I had a new tractor out of the crate, how would I properly adjust the shuttle shift the first time?

Any suggestions?

You have 2- adjustments, 1-is on the cable under the tractor, look where the cable goes thru a bracket, there are nuts on each side of the bracket which will allow you to move the cable forward or back depending on which way you adjust length, the other is the turnbuckle that you have already tried to adjust, take the cable loose from the side plate, move the hand lever to the reverse position and see where the end of the cable is vs linkage arm .If the cable is moving and adjusted but it still will not engage you may have a bent shift fork.

Your advice worked. I did the following.

1) Disconnected the shift cable (pulled the cotter pin and small pin)

2) Jacked up the tractor on stands just high enough that the rear wheels weren't touching the floor (less than an inch) and chocked one wheel on the other side of the tractor .

3) Shifted the shuttle shift lever arm (where it enters the transmission) until neutral was found (turned wheel to verify neutral)

4) I adjusted the solid rod (center adjuster) until the cable pivot arm (pivots between shift shaft and cable) was about center in it's range of motion (pointing straight down at the floor)

5) I centered the hand lever so that neutral would be where I wanted it.

6) I adjusted the cable so that it now connected to the pivot arm at the center point.

7) I reconnected the cable to the arm and replaced the cotter key.

Shuttle shift works perfectly now and neutral is centered and the hand lever is horizontal when in neutral.

This sounds like a lot but it only took 30 minutes or so to do.
