Hi, I recently ordered a new trailer and was wondering how other people have made sides for their trailers. The sides will be used for hauling split firewood and brush mainly. The new trailer is a PJ 14K 20' car/equipment hauler with no dovetail. I made my sides on my old trailer out of 1x6s but, they are pretty heavy. Here is how I did the sides on my old trailer...

I found a 4' x 50' roll of chain link fencing on clearance at Home Depot. I framed up my racks with pressure treated 2x4's and 5/4x4's and stapled on the fencing. I made 2 removable crossties from old bedrails (to keep the sides from bowing out under load). Works great for loose firewood and is fairly light weight. My trailer is 16' long.

For my 16', I used treated 1x6's, w/angle iron on the top edge. The sides are in two pieces (7' & 9') with joiners & corner brackets from Northern. I can move the end gate up to the middle when needed.

I had several 2 x 10 x 12 scaffold planks that i just stood on edge inside the frame of my equipment hauler that is 12 ft long. With some 1/4 inch cable and u-bolts I secured them thru the deck and around the frame. This allows me to haul 3 tons per load of gravel or rock with my F-250. After the quarry operator dumps the load, I spread it out a bit and cover it with a tarp for a safe trip home. After i shovel it out (the BX helps), I just unbolt the cables and remove the planks for storage.

Here's some pics of when I welded up my removable sides to my flatbed...I made the 20 foot sides in two 10 foot or so sections so they would be easier to handle when taking them off.

Thanks for the pictures guys. I never thought about using chain link fencing for sides. That's a good idea.

I found a set of side boards off of a big flatbed trailer for sale. I guess I could cut them down and make this sort of setup...

Sterff, I see you have a pretty much experience on a subject of a trailer search. :) You'll have an excellent trailer PJ 14K 20'! I really like it.

Just for sharing info - you can see in the pics my working rig (sorry for horrible quality). The trailer I still have has the originally welded on boards and the manual winch inside to load long (up to 6 m) woods. Its total loading capacity (trailer weight included) is 1.5 tons. And it worked perfectly for me.
But now I'm searching for a trailer to be attached to a M tractor (or/and to the car/truck) with the fully loaded trailer max capacity of either 3 tons (if without trailer brakes) or better 8 tons with brakes and max drawbar load of 0.8 ton. The use will be similar - to bring the ag equipment (flail mower, disc mower, rotary tiller, woods or whatever else) between my lots in a distance of 35 miles or inside a lot.
So there's no way to express a one word answer to the question "what kind of trailer do I need?". For sure you understand that.

That's what I'm looking for and thanks again for a link of PJ I'm still studying.
