Although I reach for my money whenever I encounter good old c clamps and other clamps, my "need" (lust) for some big brutal c clamps is not satisfied. Anyone build from CNC plasma cut plate large c or the "can't twist" style of clamps?

If you're going to fabricate your own, then go with either an Acme or a buttressed (if you can find it) thread.
That's what you'll find in a good quality bench vise, and with good reason.
Consider fabricating from thick walled rectangular tube, reinforced with triangular gussets.
