I have my eye on a Shibaura SD3000 4wd, 1600 hrs with a new Bulldog Loader for $6,900. What'd ya'll think?

The tractor has 4 PTO ranges, 12 speed (4 range, 3 speed), 36 hp (30 PTO)

MODEL DRIVE HP* CYL LBS LENGTH WIDTH HEIGHT
SD3000 4 WD 36 3 3727 130" 60" 76"

SOLD AS IS WHERE IS BY A UN-KNOWLEDGABLE EBAY SELLER.

What should I look for while inspecting a used tractor? Other than kick the tires of course.

This tractor is older than the hills. I'd steer away if it were me.

IMO, there seems to be three basic ingredients in selecting, purchasing and owning a great grey market tractor that will serve you well for many years...and with a minimum of repairs and upkeep.

Find a seller. One who is established, with a lot, service department or a well equipped shop, office and a phone number (yellow pages). He should have several models in various HP ranges with implements available.
Even if you know very little about tractors, an honest dealer will walk you through everything, including your size, HP, implements and budget. A dealer with less integrity will capatilize on what you don't know.

Ask for references.

Select a model (regardless of the manufacturer) that is well supported and parts are, and will be available in the future. Can't think of anything much worse than a less popular model, built in limited numbers for 1 or 2 years. Even though it may serve you well for a few years, if anything "snaps" in the drivetraine, parts (used) will be VERY difficult to come by.

Reconditioned, Rebuilt, Refurbished tractors without any documentation are none of the above. They are just tractors assembled from salvaged parts, and made to run. Fresh paint, new hour meter and a new seat does not make a reliable tractor.

I hope this helps...Mark

What years were these made? Aren't most of these tractors "older than the hills"?

Most are newer than this one. Most of the older Yanmars are at least 79 -83 models and have a pretty good following along with reasonable parts support. The Shibaura 3000 looks like something from a 50's Godzilla movie.

Not saying that I want to own one or anything like that, but I just love the looks of the older Shib SDs! The design of the headlights and grille remind me of some robot character from an old anime. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It does have a unique look. I'm just concerned about parts availability. Of course, if it never breaks down it will never need parts.

Does anyone know where to find a water pump for a 1978 (ish) Shibaura diesel? Who made the motor?? Thanks in advance.

Which specific model? We can get pumps for some of them. Email (not PM) us with specific information and we can let you know.

Nuke,

In my humble opinion Mark777 hit the nail on the head. Stick with popular models (Yanmar, etc.) and a supportive well stocked dealer. Do your parts research before you buy the odd ball with no support.
