We bought this little tractor about 10 years ago as a reman. Apparently the tractor is over 40 years old. Unfortunately the decal (SL1643) doesn't match to stamp on the block (SD 1643). Anyway I am guessing the stamp is more accurate. The other day when I was trying to start it after warming the glow plugs, it would putt once, then whirl or make a spinning sound. After playing with it for about five minutes it started and ran normal. I tried starting it later and it tried to do the same thing. I check to voltage - 12.7v. Any idea what might be wrong?

Start with the starter. The solenoid may be worn and sticking.

Here is a pic of the starter. How would I go about testing the solenoid? When I listened again, it almost sounds like the starter is spinning, but not engaging the flywheel like it has a bad gear.

The solenoid is the part with the label on it. You can test it by disconnecting the positive lead from the back of the solenoid that feeds the starter. Leave the smaller wires connected. Turn the key to start and you should hear the solenoid engage. Letting off the key the solenoid should snap back. If it does not remove it and inspect/ohm to determine if bad.

Another option is to remove the starter/solenoid as one unit and bench test it or take it to a shop for bench testing.

You can inspect the sprocket while the starter is out as well.

Okay. I pulled the wire going to the starter and no sound from the solenoid. Any need to test anything else or just get a new one?

You can take it to any "Big Box Auto Parts Store" to get it checked for free.

I would go ahead and get the starter tested as well. If you are handy you can rebuild the starter for a lot less than replacing.

As xtruckerbob stated, you can get it tested at the parts stores.

What is the difference between them and what I have now?
Thanks for the tips. I went ahead and pulled the starter and took it to Napa. The boy there said that he could only do a limited test and suggested that I take it up to Boyles Future Tech in Auburn, where they send stuff to be rebuilt. I'll do that tomorrow. Hopefully it all works out and it is just the solenoid.

your starter is called direct drive and came on the tractor from factory it has a cranking rating 1.4 or 1.8 kw the gear reducted starter has approximately the same cranking power except it spins from a series of planetary gears which consist of three small gears being spun by a large gear which creates approximately double the cranking power just by design. you mention a shop in auburn what state are you in

The only place I have found for some of the parts are Just Tractor Parts outside Los Angeles. If you know of anywhere I can get a manual or any paperwork on this tractor, let me know.

The starter had two problems, three really. It is a gear reduction starter, but the label on the starter is the wrong model. Both the clutch and the solenoid are bad so tomorrow he'll let me know prices. It should be around $100.

if the repairs are about $100.00 that is very good what was the correct starter number or did they know

Yes, parts and labor are around 100 including the new solenoid. He said the solenoid is 30, the clutch to around 30, all told 100 to fix it. I believe it was something like an s114-256. It was stamped on the body. Apparently a lot of people who do the grey market tractors just grab a sticker from the sticker bin and slap in on the starter. He had seen it done many times before.

Picked up the starter this morning and put her in this afternoon and she runs like a champ, or at least as good as she did before! I assume the whirling sound was from the bad clutch. Thanks for the help.
