I am trying to adjust valves on a Shibaura engine. The procedure requires an alignment of the the top mark on the crank pulley with the top mark of the timing gear case. The top mark on the gear case is very clear. I can't find the crank pulley mark. Would anyone know what I should be looking for? Paint mark, line, or some other alignment indicator?

Welcome and don’t sweat the marks. Turn the crank by hand and watch the valves open (rocker down) on the first valve, then close. Turn the crank a little further. At this point, that valve along with 3 others will be closed and the rockers loose. Set the gap on them paying attention to which is intake or exhaust.
Next turn the crank 180 degrees and adjust the other 3.

Tractor Tech is correct. Easiest way to do it.
