Snow Shearpin Help

I have a GC2600 with a newmassey snow blower. Lost the shearpin for the fan on the last storm (Gold shear pin).

I can line up the holes with a screw driver, I positioner the augers noted in the manual but I cannot get the shear pin to go through the hole.

Any tricks, experience, ideas?

There's generally some lash --in and out play-- in those things; perhaps the fan needs to be pulled out or pushed in just a bit?

A tapered drift punch works very well to both line up the holes and make sure they're completely clear (no metal chunks). It can also be tapped in just a bit to smooth out a burr if there is one.

When you break or tear a shear pin out sometimes it comes out alittle rough and may have left a burr on the hole/shaft.

Drive a nail or drift pin of some sort through the bolt hole. You probably had the bolt leave a piece in the hole. Happens to me often enough I carry a nail with tools to replace bolt. If in doubt the holes are aligned, just insert the point slightly and slowly rotate the fan. You should feel when the holes line up.

(1) right angle drill and a 5/16" bit later..problem solved.

I assume there was a piece lodged in the hole?

I've had luck using an allen wrench and pliers to tap the shear pin out.

So hard to tell exactly what was wrong.

I could fit the 1/4" drift through with no problem. When I tried to get the 5/16" bolt through it would not fit and after "tapping" it through the threads on it were gone.

Soran the bit through some metal came out and now all is good.

dieseler, happy it's fixed. I am considering taking the cab and blower off and storing. Not quite, but almost time to start tilling the garden.

One thing about making that blower etc investment. It works!!!! Snow goes elsewhere (Y'ano like NY) after pulling the pin on that grenade. ;-)
