There are hooks with carabiner style spring loaded closed ends which will not unhook during momentary slack in the tie strap. I wish I could find some for reasonable prices. Or a carabiner honestly rated 2000 pounds or more.

Common practice in sailing, for clip fasteners (e.g. carabiners, shackles, etc.) that one can't afford to have come un-clipped, is to just tie a loop of dyneema (e.g. Amsteel Blue) line as a back-up to the carbiner or shackke. That way, if it manages to come un-clipped, you still have the loop of line holding the rig together.

It only takes an arm's length of line or less, to back up a hook or shackle, assuming you're not worried about backing up the webbed length of the strap itself.

Helps to avoid having to do this, alone at sea!

Well color me curious... if you don't use straps, what do you use? Chains? Ropes? Faith?

Ropes, tied with the same knot I learned to use when tieing down apple crates.

Yup, those type of hooks are what you should be using if it has a suspension. They stay on, even if some slack develops.

Also using a long tiedown with the fronts angled to the rear and the rears to the front, the shallow angle will dramatically reduce the amount of slack suspension movement will generate.

I’ve said it before, gravity natures tie down. Of course if the momentum overcomes the static coefficient of friction problems develop.

Yeah, he also didn't have any lights on the trailer, and was going more than the 20 mph the SMV would indicate!
