All languages have regional or local differences. I can remember in France being told that French Canadians didn't really speak French. On a tour in Spain, our guide began by telling the Americans that spoke Mexican Spanish a list of things they couldn't say in Spain because it would be considered inappropriate.
I don't speak french, just a little "France" french I learned in high school before they banned me from
the languages department.
BUT
Between the HS stuff, and the "street" french local to my area, I once had to translate for a Ugandan man (Africans use France french) and a
guy from here who speaks Quebec french. Quebec french around here being sometimes called "Frenglish".

California, I just noticed your "An hour north of San Francisco" location.

Heck, it's been decades since I ventured in there, but even then, if starting in San Francisco I'd still be in San Francisco after an hour of driving.

I don't even need to go that far. Being from a somewhat rural part of N. Calif, it is amazing the perception and difference between rural N. Calif, Bay Area California, and urban SoCal.
You also are the third largest state in the US, with more real estate than many nations. 😉

At my workplace we have Spanish guys from Mexico, Peru and Spain they all understand each other but their are hiccups in certain and accents.
Untill a Dutch guy comes in an Amish farm and understands what they say about the Englishen... Same goes for Afrikaans. They are surprised to find out they dont speak a language, but a dialect 🤪

Nah. I'm 20 minutes west of Santa Rosa. Russian River wine terroir (region), Sonoma County.

Rural with lots of wealthy people retiring onto the existing small farms. As did my grandfathers on both sides, 1940 then 1950, back when too-small unproductive farms cost very little.

You see mostly rural (mostly pastures), lots of grapes, as soon as you get 20 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

View of my apple orchard looking East from my deck. (This used to be a major apple production region). Santa Rosa is in far left background. Mayacama Mountains (Coast Range) in the background.

And a typical local real estate listing where someone spent far more than it was worth to establish a hobby vineyard just for the 'ambiance'. 5 miles NW of me, more hilly.
In contrast my place just has the original 1920 simple 1br farmhouse, the original orchard, and the original pre-electricity windmill (now idle) to provide the ambiance.

Photo, when I climbed and topped the juvenile Redwood that interfered with the windmill tail swinging around. I love this place.

Not repo - he came out of an airport parking area; I could hear the metal scrapping as he drive by. I thought he was going to pull over and fix everything once he got into a more open spot, but he didn’t. This was about a mile from where I first saw him.
