I remember back in the late 70's around Ft. Lauderdale. The number of mid-late 60's olds delta 88's, 98's, buick electras and chrysler Imperials driving around that at first glance looked like no one was in the driver's seat. When you got up behind them ... sure enough two hands just visible on the wheel and a bit of blue hair about level with the hands. I was a mechanic at the time & asked a few of these old ladies when they came in for tune-ups/oil changes why they didn't sell & get something smaller & easier for them to drive & the answer was always the same ..." My poor (Herbert/Ralph/Henry/Stanley), rest his soul, told me that this was the best car to ever come out of Detroit and he made me promise I would never sell it. Our daughter/son/grandkid can do what they want when my time comes to join him, but until then I'm honoring my promise."
My grandmother never learned to drive until she was in her '50s. She then became the proverbial little old lady who only drove to church... in a 1966 Fairlane fastback with a 289 auto and no power steering or brakes.

My grandmother used to like telling a story of when she and her sister drove to Washington DC, and got caught on a round-about, going round and round on the inner lane, without sufficient aggression to nudge into traffic on the outer lane and get out. This would have been presumably 1930's.

National Lampoon's European Vacation had a bit like this, circling Big Ben.

Did she have no power brakes or absolutely no brakes? If she had no brakes, might have been why she drove like an old lady!:D

Read a news article from the weekend where a semi lost a set of duals on the interstate near metro Minneapolis and the duals struck another vehicle (Nissan Rogue) and killed two people in it. Not really much more info than that being published so isn't really worth linking to the article. But, damn, that would be a sucky way to go.

Only in Miami Florida. 10/16/2023 This guy after passing the street light almost hit center medium with the plywood on the left side of the van. Straight out of Home Depot. Home Depot gives you red flags but he said hell no that’s for wimps.

When I see people loading a vehicle like this at Lowes Depot, I can never help myself from commenting to them, "nice truck"!

Recently saw one guy loading 16 ft. 2x4's thru the sunroof of his sedan, with the fore end pointing up at least 10 feet into the air in front of the vehicle. I could only imagine him catching that on an overpass or low drive-thru window awning. I yelled, "nice truck", and he just smiled and nodded.

Very few things over a public highway are 10' or less clearance.
I somehow find it hard to believe that guy was headed to the Mickie D's drive through.

That has happened twice on I-75 here this year. Once on the Ohio side, once on the Kentucky side. Fatalities both times.

Those front wheel drive Escorts were tiny cars, esp a 2 dr.
My brother in law had one when he dated my oldest sister.

And a neighbour has one, an 87 1.3 three door swapped with a 2 liter Blacktop engine from a Mondeo. 135hp is pretty wild for an 800kg car.

A state trooper was killed a few years ago when that happened. He had pulled over to help a stranded motorist.

I was beside a semi on I-65 who had a right rear drive tire blow on his tractor. Rubber flew everywhere around my car. We pulled over. Looked at his truck. Looked at my car. Couldn't find any damage to my car. I didn't hear anything hit, just rubber flying over my hood. Shook hands and I went on my way.

Loose tires are extremely dangerous especially when they start bouncing.

Driving in to work this morning in the dark on a divided highway I noticed yellow flashing lights every once in a while up in the distance. Traffic kept flowing so didn't think too much about it, I figured what ever it was took an exit. Then I noticed a pickup going backwards down the road with no lights. Then noticed it was hooked to a tow truck. The pickup blocked all the flashing lights of the tow truck and you could not see it until you got close.

A number of years ago a friend of mine was following a semi on a San Diego freeway. The entire rear axle departed the semi. The axle and wheels bounced on the road in front of him and completely cleared his car and creamed the car behind him. He didn’t see the result of the hit as he was trying to avoid the swerving semi.

I follow an Ontario Provincial Police Carrier enforcement officer on twitter. He posts pictures of
what he sees on commercial vehicles he stops.
Frightening stuff on some of them.

No time for a photo, but today at the merge point of two freeways I saw a CHP officer, flashing lights on, parked behind and protecting a small junk trailer. As we got closer it was obvious the hub and wheel had come off the trailer leaving just the stub axle. Somebody forgot the cotter pin?

Seemed to me the only way to get the pickup and trailer to a safe place would be to just order the pickup to drag the trailer as-is to the shoulder beyond the merge, because getting a wrecker in there and hooked up with a dolly would disrupt traffic and likely cause crashes.

Over here, its mostly grossly overloaded, poorly maintained single axle trailers without brakes, light nor tag that gets overloaded by folks that have absolutely no clue what dirt weighs, untill they bust a wheel bearing.
Then they turn out to weigh twice the 1500 pounds they are allowed on a trailer without tag nor brakes, so they end up in court because overloading twice is an economical offence...

Around here they don’t care about disrupt traffic. They will shut down a road and let you sit there for hours until they get a tow truck to clear the road.
