A salvage operator was quoted in a news report as saying no barge crane in Egypt was big enough. The max gross weight for a 40' container is 67,000 pounds so most would be lighter. The problem is not so much the weight, but at the length of boom required, the moments would be enormous. The ship is almost 200' wide, can you imagine a 25 ton lift on the end of a horizontal 100' jib?

These containers are not that heavy. Can't they get a tall crane brought in and just start unloading it to lighten it up?
I always wanted a sky hook. Bet they do now also. Jon

I looked to see if a heavy-lift helicopter would do. One site said the largest in the world has capacity of 44,000 lbs.

A traditional logging outfit in NorCal has expanded to helicopter logging but I see their limit is 20,000 lbs. What we've seen is they drag one end of a log uphill to where a loader can get ahold of it, in steep canyons where we had seen them use overhead cables for this in the past.

So - heavy-lift helicopters aren't a solution to get those containers off.

Tare weight on a 40 footer is 40,000 pounds not including the container weight. 20 TEU containers can also weigh 40K net. Think that is beyond the capabilities of any heavy lift chopper.

Smit Tac will handle it just fine. Even if they have to offload containers. If they do, I imagine thy will bring in one of their heavy lift stiff leg barge mounted cranes. Heavy salvage is child's play for them.

Just gonna take time to coordinate all the necessary equipment.

They say they have a plan, and the canal should be open in 2 - 3 days.

I saw that. But I think the source was the same Canal Agency official who a couple of days ago said the ship had already been turned parallel to the bank. (Fake News).

Imagine minding your own business, sailing your dinky, environmentally friendly sailboat and hitting one of those containers?

A container ship can only withstand so much roll in heavy seas and the lashings will fail and poop happens. I'd say they had a lashing failure due to heavy seas. Of course lots of customers won't be getting their imported goods anytime soon and the ones on the sea floor are shot anyway. , plus they have to be salvaged at the ship owner's expense.

I don't believe anything was 'hauled wrong'. I tend to believe there was a lashing failure. Tie down stuff does break under tremendous strain.
Storms of that size do not just pop up out of nowhere. I have to believe these days there is plenty of weather data out there so it would appear that they tried pushing the limit to make schedule. They could gave held back.
