Egyptian ship pilot's GPS said "Turn right in 1/4 mile."

I don't see the problem, they have the required flag on the end.

Lots of interesting details in this article!

“They’ll need a full survey of the seabed and canal bottom [per]Nick Sloane, the salvage master who miraculously led the removal of the Costa Concordia cruise ship in 2014. “The worst case is that the ship is presently supported over her bow and stern areas, meaning possible sags in the middle.”

Those sags could lead to the ship splitting in two, spilling the [containers] into the canal, making it temporarily impassable.
“The risk is that it could also become top-heavy and capsize,” Captain John Konrad, founder and CEO of gCaptain shipping industry website

before anyone can even think of lightening the massive vessel—which is 1,312 feet long and 194 feet wide, with 50 feet of the ship below the water—they would need to download the schematics of the ship and run them through a series of computer-generated programs to determine what offloading will do to the balance.
And then, they would have to somehow get a maritime crane to Egypt since the country does not own one tall enough to reach the top of the Ever Given’s 20,000 containers

That's easy. You see all of those smaller pieces under the main stem? The tree was raised up to tailgate level and they backed the van up onto it, very fast.

Tare weight on a 40 footer is 40,000 pounds not including the container weight. 20 TEU containers can also weigh 40K net. Think that is beyond the capabilities of any heavy lift chopper.
My 40' was delivered by a ram 3500 drw on ~20k gvwr goose. Pretty sure the sticker on it says something about 8900# empty, and it's a high cube so that's near the upper end of empty weights.

[Just realized I think there's a mismatch in our understandings of what "tare weight" is :: it's the empty weight]
