A container ship can only withstand so much roll in heavy seas and the lashings will fail and poop happens. I'd say they had a lashing failure due to heavy seas. Of course lots of customers won't be getting their imported goods anytime soon and the ones on the sea floor are shot anyway. , plus they have to be salvaged at the ship owner's expense.

I don't believe anything was 'hauled wrong'. I tend to believe there was a lashing failure. Tie down stuff does break under tremendous strain.

That depends on the insurance program that was selected for the cargo. Some plans will have the haulage rates of the surviving cargo raised to help cover the cost.

Contrary to belief, they do not route vessels for safety, they route them for fuel efficiency, which generally means great circles, pushing ships INTO the bad weather. A fool can tell you that passages nearer to the equator will give calmer seas, but no-one wants to pay for the extra fuel. So long as insurers are willing to pick up the bills for these practices, this will continue. Sadly the words “rhumb line” have been forgotten. You can always dodge the weather, but it might cost you a few litres of fuel.

I heard somewhere, don't remember where, that a company from The Netherlands was being brought in within the next couple of days.
Sounds like it might Mammoet. They specialize in heavy lift, drag, haul.

To be fair, I'm sure it's 10s of thousands liters of fuel.

I certainly don't doubt it though. It's how I can get a duplex outlet for $0.40. it costs me $0.50 to send a letter across town.

Covid has certainly shown how "balanced" or "finely tuned" (said somewhat tongue in cheek and somewhat seriously) everything is. Fro TP to plywood to shipping containers.

That would be Mammoet. Smit Tak does heavy lift with stiff legs as well but maybe none of their equipment is close enough. They both work together many times. Seen a YT video where Smit Tak lifted 1/3 of a sunken oil tanker in one piece. Cut the ship in 3rds and lifted it. Kind of surprised that none of the Smit Tak offshore tugs has enough bollard pull to free it. They have some huge offshore tugs, so does Mammoet
Hate to think what the bill will be but then the owners probably signed the vessel over to them for salvage rights

Stern of the Suez ship has moved a bit.

"SUEZ, Egypt, March 27 (Reuters) – Efforts to dislodge a giant container ship blocking the Suez Canal had allowed its stern and rudder to move on Saturday, but it remained unclear when it could be refloated, the head of the canal authority said."

I hope the rest of the ship moved too.

That ship only has a draft of fifty feet. You could put all manner of tugs on the normal upper pulling points, and simply flip the ship. A friend told me he heard they welded on pulling points. I guess lower down.

IT"S COMPLICATED!

Moving a bit.

Tugs working to refloat the Ever Given managed to shift the stricken container ship 29 meters on Saturday, and dredgers succeeded earlier in freeing the propellers from the sediment that’s glued the vessel to the bank of the Suez Canal since Tuesday.

Dredging work will continue until 4 p.m. local time Sunday, at which point the refloating operations will resume, Inchcape Shipping Services said. Another two tugs are set to arrive, adding to the 11 currently on site, according to Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, technical manager for the vessel.
