The world abounds with stupidity.

What leads you to that conclusion? You weren't there so you don't have any idea of the circumstances surrounding the grounding. Smit Tac is on the scene. If any salvor can get it refloated, they can. Big ship and the Suez is narrow at that point. In fact, that particular area is one way, one ship at a time.

To insinuate there was stupidity makes you appear stupid. There were 2 canal pilots on board at the time. You cannot traverse the canal without qualified canal pilots on board.

I think MoKelly was referring to the ship that lost thousands of containers while crossing the Pacific.

Having said that, your comments are right on. The article mentions that they went through a violent storm; who knows what the real story is here.

A container ship can only withstand so much roll in heavy seas and the lashings will fail and poop happens. I'd say they had a lashing failure due to heavy seas. Of course lots of customers won't be getting their imported goods anytime soon and the ones on the sea floor are shot anyway. , plus they have to be salvaged at the ship owner's expense.

I don't believe anything was 'hauled wrong'. I tend to believe there was a lashing failure. Tie down stuff does break under tremendous strain.

They need to find that Toyota pick up truck to yank that ship loose. You know the Toyota, the one from the commercial that tows the space shuttle around.

They need to find something. I read today it’s costing $6-$10 billion a week. 12% of total world trade goes thru that canal.

I guess insurance companies are all running for cover.

These containers are not that heavy. Can't they get a tall crane brought in and just start unloading it to lighten it up?

I recently worked a windfarm project. Those cranes are about as big as mobile, somewhat easy cranes to take apart and move, and I’m pretty sure they aren’t big enough to start unloading containers. There was a pic earlier and you can see the excavator up near the bow, it looks tiny. Even those cranes I saw wouldn’t have the reach to maybe get a few near the bow, and I doubt that even.
